Default Pot Holes ARRGGHHH!

Two weeks ago, I cured my 2008 XJ8L's vibration issue by road force balancing and it drove beautifully until yesterday when I droveinto a pothole on I295!
Three tires are badly damaged and probably two wheels.
I now have to buy a set of tires. I am going to all-season.
I will buy on tire rack.
Any brand suggestions?

Default Potholes

I had the same issue. Hit a pothole when I was changing lanes on the Northern State Parkway. Now I have a vibration, I am sure I have 2 slightly bent wheels. I have Dunlaps on the car and they have great grip and are good in the wet but a little noisy.

If highway defects are a real problem, take this opportunity to downsize the wheels and up the tyre aspect ratio, so the tyre can absorb more of the shock. I would suggest the 17" wheels, but you maybe have these already. Lets face it, you have got to spend a lot, so lets spend it so it mitigates the problem. This is a UK problem too.

Default Minimizing occurrence of bent rims

Downsizing rims can help avoid problems when driving on bad roads but still I managed to warp 18" rims (w/ 40 series tires) a while back. IMHO, inflation pressures are very important but not in the way most people think. Inflating tires above normal (say 38psi when the door sticker says 32psi) will increase your chances of oval-izing your previously round rims if you hit a major bump at speed. On the other hand, underinflating your tires will put you at risk of having the rim make contact with the bump. I had my tires above spec resulting in oval (and therefore ruined) rims but no rim contact or damaged rubber.

Bottom line: choose your inflation pressures wisely. Too much pressure and there won't be enough give in the rubber to cushion that pothole. Too little pressure and you may puncture your tire and/or dent the rim.

I bought 4 Bridgestone Turanza Serenties through Tire Rack. For the 19inch rims, they were the highest rated all-season tires. My local shop, Noble Automotive in Westmont New Jersey did a super job mounting them.
The Jag is now MUCH quieter and with a greatly improved ride over the nasty Pirelli's. I now just have to have one of the rim's straightened and all will be well.

A lot of people knock Continentals however I've had a good experience with them. I use the basic ProContact all seasons and they've treated me well. I put just over 20,000 on them and they're barely worn.
