Quick Fix for broken nipple on Coolant Tank
#21
I'm pretty sure my nipple is starting to fail. I have yet to see coolant pooled around it but it seems to be the source of the coolant smell I get after a run, I am losing coolant at an amazingly slow rate, AND when I wiggle the hose attached to it, there is more wiggle than my instincts tell me is ok. The last time I wiggled it while the engine was hot and coolant under pressure I swear I saw little puffs of vapor coming from there. The tank was replaced at 43,000 and I'm at 65,000. 20,000 miles doesn't sound like much but I don't think I should try to remove the hose without having the parts for chillyphilly's fix next to me.

Did any of you guys experience your car running hot, being the reason you noticed this nipple being broke? I saw the same thing as Xx, with having coolant around the tank rim..
Mine ran hot on me, & I immediately parked it & got it towed home. This was Sat. Today, I was checking things out & noticed my nipple was broke. But to my question, did any of yours run hot on you?..
Would that be reason for it running hot?

I'm on my third tank, and it's leaking. If they were $20, sure whatever, but they aren't cheap!
Unfortunately I remember having a heck of a time getting the lower hose back on, something about a weird clip. Last time I had a shop do it.
Maybe I'll try this on this one. This isn't our long-haul car any more, so if it strands me it won't be far from home or work.

When putting it back on it can be securely placed in a "halfway home" position and then when you have pushed the connector from the hose on to the tank fully it can be pushed back into its securing groove.
The only way I have had success is to use some sort of block behind the hose and then a wooden lever to close the connection tightly AFTER making sure the groove and slot line up.
The other issue I found is that the pipe connected to the nipple was soft whereby the clamp had insufficient wrap around pressure to seal so the leak I had was between the rubber and the nipple and not from a cracked nipple.
I discovered that after buying a new tank.

But not full enough ! When I got this warning the level was only slightly lower than normal. Before I took it to the shop, I topped up and it only took about 250-300ml. Always best to heed low coolant warnings !

It's definitely topped off. Another question; the cap, it's supposed to lock once turned to tight? Or does it continually spin. I can't recall, but more is spinning & not locking...

They click like your gas cap, then get pretty snug, but never put much force on anything, after it feels snug enough. As far as the overflow tanks failing, they are not very robust, but will crack easily when a ham handed tech leans on them, while looking things over. Then bring it to your attention, that it has a crack in it and could cause you a problem, just to let you know.( They are right in front, asking to be leaned on.) As far as the connection on the bottom of the tank, place the ring into place, the hose slides right in, latching itself right into place

Hello all,
Regarding the wonderful job made by chillyphilly...
Does anybody knows how thick is the coolant expansion tank wall at the broken nipple area, (in mm - more or less)?
Thanks in advance.

Yeah my nipple got broke during last service "by the mechanic" when changing other coolant parts, $250 ($US150?), and I remember thinking an epoxied brass insert (like a bit of brass tube from a model shop) would fix it nice.
The danger is maybe the whole plastic tank has weakened with time, who knows, I did inspect the carcass and it looked alright to me if I could be bothered fixing it. V6 is different tank but same principle.
But then I realised I'm a Jaguar Driver. I don't work on it myself but I save on having no chauffeur, which is for my next errmm Rolls Royce? (in the afterlife).
Good on you guys. I think the fix is perfect. I am joking about a well-heeled owner of course.
(I did have a plastic tank collapse on a Mazda MPV, and maybe that coloured my thinking. Not to mention the whole radiator as well...a chauffer would have been cheaper)
