I gave up using a radar detector as a too for exceeding the speed limit years ago. Insurance is just too excpensive. However, a radar detector has saved me more than once when I didn't notice how fast I was going. When I bought my XJR I tried to balance price and performance and ended up getting the Cobra iRadar. On it's own it's a basic unit and adequate for what I need, but with the mobile app it adds red light cameras, speed traps, and user-reported sites in realtime. Pretty nice for $89.

Radar detectors are pretty much worthless here in Denver as all traffic cops have gone to laser guns. My escort detects laser, but the warning is too late. If you want real protection, get a laser jammer -- not federally illegal like radar jammers, but illegal in some states. I let someone else lead the way and take point.
