Hello-

Replaced the rear park sensor today. Here are some pics.

First, put the car on ramps and remove most of the trunk coverings.

Test replacement sensor for proper operation.

Removed failed sensor.

The plastic 'ears' came off the bumper with the sensor. The info I had said to push and twist the sensor out (xk8), but this was not the case. So, the flat plastic 'ears' came off and needed to be affixed again.

There are clips on each side of the sensor that can be moved away from the sensor with a flat screw driver. No twist, no spring; just open the clips and pull sensor out.

So, affixed unit to bumper with epoxy. Held in place a couple minutes.

Reinstall bumper; replacement sensor works great!

Total time about 2:30; being overly careful.

Next time 1:30-2:00.

Thanks

Thanks for such detail. I have to get my inner sensor connection cleaned as I'm getting an intermittent code. This will be very helpful!

I just received my replacement eBay sensor, same one. Your thread is helpful!

Did you paint the sensor yourself? I have some touchup paint, I'm thinking of using it to get it the right color.

No, I was able to find a red used one, so no need to paint.

Perfect match, too!

Thanks-

i realized this is an old thread, but a dang good one. I used it along with the pics to replace one of my rear sensors. Purchased one from ebay for about $25. Fairly easy, except when everything is removed (plastic pins and bolts) it takes some wiggling and pressure to dislodge the bumper from the body. I just dropped the side where bad sensor lived and replaced. No need for glue as you pop the old one from outside in while holding open 2 tabs to release it.

So happy the loud 'beep' when going to reverse is now gone !!!!!!!!!

Overall, it was about 3 beers of time (1.5 hours) taking my time. I can now do it in 20 mins when needed in the future.

That is the route I go. Very similar up for the front bumper as well...

Acler8 -

Thanks for reviving this useful post. When I first got my super V8 3 years ago I bought 18 inch rims from Magmedia. He is a good guy who hasn't posted in a while.

I will try this my self as I'm tired of not having the sensors work.

Is there only one to replace? On my car it looks like there are 4 "circles" i.e. sensors?

Thanks
Mike

There are four sensors, but i had only one bad sensor. There was a code on the OBD2 reader and i followed instructions from this forum about putting car in reverse and placing your ear next to each sensor. If you hear a clicking sound (sonar) then all is good. When a sensor is not making a noise, then that is the bad one.

Aceler8

Thanks for that follow up.

I assume that one needs a trusted helper who promises to keep their foot and the brake and the car in reverse while one listens to the sensor signals.

This might be one way to find out how our wives feel about us and our cars.

But we already know that answer.

Thanks again.

True...no need to take chances with engine running, just turn key to position II and apply emergency brake so all is good.

Been there. In my case, the center passenger side rear parking assist sensor was defective, but I subsequently left it in place. Best to simply unplug the harness to the rear parking assist module, and perform a hard reboot. Otherwise, chances are extremely good that the rear bumper and/or other plastic structures will be damaged in the process.

UH, I feel a little stupid, but that's why I don't do my own work. However I will do this.

I tried it and it is my passenger side middle rear sensor that is not working.

I'll try the rest of the fix after getting my sensor. will check the front too.

Thanks
Mike

P.S. - Got my car back today from shop who informed that front engine and coolant seals are leaking.

Says that it would be too much time and guess work on parts needed to attempt repair.

There is oil on the ground everyday, and just inside driver side wheel, and a very slight coolant smell.
I am (was) losing a quart of oil about 1,000 mies I think> I'll start to record accurately now.

Shop said take to dealer to diagnose. There's no way I'm doing that, and no way I'm giving up on this beautiful car.

I'm sure I'm not the first bloke in this tub. Suggestions?

I installed a £20 eBay kit to my old car. It worked fine for years. The hardest part is getting the holes lined up - use masking tape or something, and take your time measuring Nox Vidmate VLC everything up.

Very informative and well illustrated; this will help a lot. My rear parking sensors worked intermittently, then less and less. The front sensors still function, unaffected by the fault on the rear.
