I have a 2005 xtype estate, Its also got a problem on the module. They are bad for getting damp in the tyre well. I got it checked and the sensors on the rear are ok its definitely the module and you must get the exact same part number replacement. They cost £150 from Jaguar, another of their rip offs, You may get one on e bay about £80. I am still looking 4x43 15K866 AD. If anyone has a spare please let me know.

 

For what it's worth, the problem on mine turned out to be the speaker itself. No surprise; it's on the back package deck so it's exposed to sun constantly. Here's a fun fact: the same part is used by Ford ($8.49), Jaguar ($48), and Nissan ($86!!). Ford was backordered, but I found a dealer in Ohio that had one in stock and they kindly mailed it to me for $6.

I started having the backup alarm going off about a week ago. It appears to be a module issue since I couldn't hear any clicking from the sensors and when I backed up to a wall no sensors went off. What's a bit difficult to trouble shoot is that now everything works OK.

 

I think my rear parking assist was working when I got the car, but everything was new to me then so I can't be absolutely sure, However they are no longer working.

Reading here about the 3 second tone and the clicking of the sensors, I checked, and there is a loud 3 second tone coming from the back when it is first shifted into reverse, but no messages and no CEL. I had my wife start the car and put it in reverse with her foot on the brake while I checked the rear sensors with a stethoscope. Three of them do click, but the far right hand one does not, so I assume that is the problem.

Am I correct in assuming one malfunctioning sensor would disable the rear system? (the front ones work fine) Is there any good way to test a single sensor? Might it be a matter of wiring? I looked in the boot and everything there looks clean and neat. Is the sensor control one of the two boxes mounted on the left side wall by the tire? Any suggestions will be appreciated

 

Yes, your non clicking sensor is most likely the culprit. The module for the parking sensor is one labeled 8CH.

 

Thanks, I'll try cleaning the connector to that box and the side marker/parking sensor connectors and see if that helps. I wonder what the chances are of the sensor itself going bad; It looks like removing the rear bumper cover is pretty involved, so I hope that won't be necessary.

edit: disconnected and sprayed contact cleaner in the two connectors along the back of the boot and removed the parking aid module, but I can't figure out how to disconnect the plug. The manual is very helpful in that it just says "Disconnect the parking aid module electrical connector." I can't find a release of any kind. Anyone know how this comes off?

 

I think it's just a standard push in release clip. It's been awhile since I messed with mine. Yeah, the sensors go bad over time as they lose their water resistance. Water gets in and ruins the sensor.

 

I finally got it disconnected with the help of a magnifying glass; there is a little U shaped arm that swings sideways to sort of cam the connector out (the connector says Ford on it, BTW). I was able to spray it with CRC contact cleaner, but unfortunately the malfunction remains. At least I've now tried the easiest things; on to the harder ones later; it's wine time now.

Edit: Is it possible to get to the individual sensor connectors without removing the bumber cover? (hope, Hope)

 

Yeah, that's a typical Ford clip, GM uses them for major harnesses. Honestly I'd just replace the sensor. They are about $20 a sensor. I just couldn't get used to how loud the system was and I'm used to the proportions of the car so I unplugged the unit.

 

By unplugging the unit it did not throw a code?

 

Nope, no issues at all. Just like doing a suspension conversion, disconnecting the module and doing a hard reset of the car by disconnecting the battery makes the car act as if it never had that system. I don't think the battery reset was even necessary for the parking module.

 

My sincere apologies; I never saw this inquiry. For anyone running across this post, the Ford part number for the parking assist rear speaker that was used (at least) on the 2004 XJ is 3W8Z15K864A.
