Default Rear Wheel Bearing, need a bit of help

Hey everyone, my 2004 XJ8 is pretty noisy from the rear. At first I thought it was from the shot rear rotors, so I replaced both rotors and pads. Replaced all the brake fluid, bleed the system, reset the Parking brake.

With each job being completed, the noise levels came down. But it just didnt go away. I did a part search using google, the bearings came in at about $40 a peice, I'm assuming I need 1 per side.

Heres where I need help from anyone who has gotten their rear bearings replaced.

Do I need just the wheel bearings, or the whole hub assembly ?
Being a reardrive car, will the driveshafts need to be disconnected ?
Any special tools needed ? I did a site search and found that I may need an ABS ring removal tool ?

Again Thanks to any help in advance, Victor.

2004 XJ8 73,400 miles.

services performed by myself

Coolant Flush
Trans Flush
Sparkplugs Replaced
Rear Brakes Overhauled
System bleed
ThrottleBody cleaning
Maf cleaning
All coilpack connections cleaned
Breathers cleaned

Services to be performed

New front pads
Shaving front rotors
Trans pan and gasket
Trans flush
Rear wheel bearing/hub?

I purchased the car July 2009 with 69k miles, I need this car to last a long time and really want it to be in tip top shape so again any help with this rear bearing issue will be greatly appreciated.

Should I leave it to the pros or do this will my father ? My father is experianced with wheel bearings as he replaced them many times.

It seems that I would need a bearing press, a tool to remove the ABS sensor (as noted in first post), adaptors(I'm assuming for the bolts)

Seems like too much to do on my own on the street, I wonder what jaguar would charge for this procedure.

Does the JTIS give an ET for the job ?

Thanks I truly appreciate you taking time out to check this out for me.It seems with the weather cooler that it gets noisier and noisier.

The JTIS doesnt give any times, I think you would need to ask a dealer how long they have the job listed at.

I have a 2004 Type-x 3.0 L 98k mi-- I would like to change the US front driver, bearing are the same tools and parts needed. I have found the bearing alone available or should I replace it with the armature assy?

Default rear wheel bearing

hello ,

I did the job a few month ago , nothing difficult , no need of special tool to remove the ABS sensor

just usual extractor to remove the hub and the bearing

For an easiest fit , I put the aluminium hub in the oven ( my wife was not there ! ) to heat it to about 100 ° and the bearing just drop without any press needed

In my case the noise of the bearing was caused by corrosion on one side ( water should have go inside during a pressure wash

to be sure to locate was bearing make the noise it is better to put the car on stand and rotate the wheel by the engine

I thought from inside that the noise was at the right side , but was on the left !

Hope this will help

Philippe
