My rear shade has always worked fine, but maybe as an '08 it needs more time to start screwing up. My VDP does have the side window shades, but the first time I tried to deploy them the thumb-grasp part disintegrated, both sides the same. Too long in the hot sun, I suppose. I can still deploy them, but it's a little clumsy without the tab. By the way, I leave the rear shade up almost all summer to keep the morning sun from cooking the inside before I drive it later in the day. I put it down once in a while, just for the exercise, but it's usually up.
