Default relay id & location

Unlike vehicles I'm used to the fuse box lid does not id the relay functions. I went to my JTIS disc and can't find a straight forward chart there either. I can look up relays in the electrical schematics but that is a lot of work just to id the function of a single relay by wading thru many many charts and schematics.

Am I missing something here? I know JTIS is somewhat obtuse and clunkly to operate but can it be this bad?

Does there exist a relay location chart that indicates function? The owners manual does not address relay id, function or location,WTF?

Anybody??

In the JTIS manual I have, you have to look at the circuit diagrams under the "eletrical guide" tab and find the R or F number. Then location where that Relay or Fuse is at. An example would be R5 in the Passenger Junction Fuse Box. It's a real pain!! Make sure you read the beginning of the guide because you migh have to follow symbols to relate to what the relay or fuse is protecting. The first few pages on the guide gives an overview. I hope this helps.

I just went to look at my owners manual for my '06 XJ and sure enough all three relay locations are listed along with the number and function of each.

It would be nice however, if they put a list IN each relay box also.

Lucky you re relay info in your owners manual. My owners manual, for an 04 XJ, has a chart of all 3 fuse boxes with the location and function of each fuse detailed. It makes no mention whatsoever of the relays.
If only it was a requirement that technical writers be car guys life would be so sweet.
Any chance you could post these charts in your manual? I suspect the are pretty much the same for my car.

If you are asking for the JTIS charts.....there are like 30 plus and it's about 5 meg. The owners manual can be downloaded from the sticky in this forum. PM me and I could email the PDF from JTIS.

I feel your pain. Even in the parts look up they are not listed by application. It reads as: Relay, then part number, and instead of how many are used on the car it reads "as required." Arrgh!

Drew, Thanks no. I don't need the JTIS stuff as I've already got it. You did, however, say that your owners manual referenced relay location and function. Mine does not. I tried the sticky but it's not working. Apparently the site is a bit contankerious.

If you could post those pages on this site or send me copies by mail my problem would be solved. PM me for address if can do.

Thanks in advance

Thanks guys,

I finally got on line with the owners manuals and the all appear to be like mine. No info on relay location and function. That is really dumb!
Either the Tech Writers are not car guys or Jag made an excutive decission at some level not to include this info. Go figure.

Drew,

Wow! Just what I wanted. Where did you find it or did you make up your own chart from the schmatics?

Thanks for the JTIS file you emailed me. I already had it and still can't find anything like the relay function chart you just posted in it. Am I missing something?

Thanks a load!

I created it. The wiring diagrams show the relay, relay number and location. I couldn't find a relay for R4 in the rear distribution box. I have it in excel if you want to edit it.

Thanks Drew,

I know this is an old thread, but I recently suffered a self inflicted problem because I didn't have an accurate relay function/location list. I had moved a relay from what I saw in the electrical guide was the "diesel EMS control" relay position to a position for a windshield heater relay, assuming that the diesel relay was not needed. Turns out the relay that I moved from R5 to R3 was not for an unneeded diesel EMS control on my North American SV8 but was the relay for my outer headlights.... and my car does not even have a windshield heater which is apparently why that position was empty. I didn't realize the problem I'd created until I was caught in the dark returning from my wife's doctors appointment in Oklahoma yesterday evening and had to upset a lot of folks by driving with the inner high beams on.

I had looked for and asked about such a list, but didn't find one until I was searching the archives trying to diagnose my self inflicted headlight problem and ran across your post. Your relay list should be in the sticky section as an excel or pdf file and I would appreciate a copy of the excel file if you can email one.

There is no relay list in the Owner's manuals I've downloaded from the topix site and I still don't understand why jaguar didn't just put a label in each fuse box cover unless they wanted one more reason to send you back to a dealer.
