replacing motor mounts

I have stains on a motor mount of my 2004 XJR that make me think it may need to be replaced, and an occasional thunk after all the suspension bushings have been replaced. That noise maybe was always there, but I cannot remember, and am perhaps over-sensitized. Has anyone tried replacing the mounts? I have an engine lift, but am not near that garage this winter, so it would be interesting if the job could be done without the lift.

Generically speaking ( I am a new owner of a 2005 Super V8 but haven't looked at my engine), lift of course is ideal, followed by an engine support bar. The only other option I've heard recommended is jacking up at the harmonic balancer, which I don't know that the engine has. Some lift via the oil pan using a floor jack but I think that's too much pressure on the pan, gasket, etc..
Best of luck.
