Default Replacing rear parking sensors - How to

Hi all,
this is just a quick heads up, please accept my apologies IF it's been covered before....I've looked and can't see where it has.

I needed a new rear parking sensors on my 58 plate XJ X358
The bumper was not removed!

It was a case of removing the rear lights, or in this case the passenger side rear....it was the left outer and left inner that were playing up.
This allowed limited access to both units ( clearly helps if you know what you're doing as no visibility, all done by feel only )

Both units were removed and replaced in a very short time period.
Hope it helps someone!
Thanks
Jim

Good timing. One of mine seems to have just popped itself halfway back into the bumper.

I actually watched the tech do it, so so easy and much quicker, less hassle all round.
The only caveat is, it's a tight space so anyone with Popeye arms should probably forget it, lol.
Hope to hear how you get on XJ8JR

Hi Jim,
I have a problem with my rear parking sensors, it makes a long beep when the reverse gear is engaged, but never worked since i bought the car. I have inspected the wiring and found the far left burnt out and disconnected, so reconnected it, but it still doesn't work. Any clues as to how to detect a non working sensor.
Thanks.

If it's one or more failed sensors: ignition on, engine off, reverse gear, listen right next to each sensor. Should hear a slight ticking at each.

You can do it with engine on but...

As above really
Good working sensors should produce a very faint tick tick tick tick sound
Non working sensors do not

I could never hear any of mine ticking even though two had failed.

I did it by substitution in the end.

Need to be very careful with the plastic clips that hold the sensors.

Pull the fuse to stop the noise pro tem.

Hi Meirion, how do you detach the sensor from the bumper? My far right and far left has failed, i can get access to it, but don't know if it's a pull out or screw out so i can replace it. Any help will do.

The sensors are held in a delicate looking clip presumably glued to the inside of the bumper.

I removed the bumper to replace mine but then I had to hack off a clip at the bottom of the

wheel liner which was attached to the bumper.

Great design-a metal fastening in an area prone to corrosion holding two bits

of plastic together.

Sorry but I can't tell you any more about the clip-it was years ago when I did mine but

it was just a matter of unclipping it not unscrewing.

Details of bumper removal in JTIS if you want to go down that route.
