Question rhythmic whoosh sound

I am still getting used to my 2006 XJ8
I have this rhythmic whoosh sound when I am standing still with the car on. This only happens when I am in drive or reverse and the car is hot. If I put the transmission into park or neutral the sound disappears. The sound is relative subdued but still noticeable. This is definitely from the transmission – does anyone have an idea if this is normal and what courses it?
Thank you in advance

I'm afraid I don't know the cause, but it sure as heck ain't normal, mine is silent at standstill, well, apart from that lovely little V8 burble.

What mileage? You might want to get the trans fluid level checked. Any oil spots where you park? Do you have capability to get under it and inspect the pan, general area around the trans?

The millage is 48000. It does not drip oil from the transmission and the plastic pan is fine. I can see the lines to the cooler has leaked but it is minimal. It is at the dealer now for the cooler lines and I ask them to investigate the whoosh sound since I want it to be fixed before the warranty expire or at least have the problem recorded. Would it hurt the transmission to be a little low on fluid?

Dealer could not find anything wrong. I have discovered that if I turn of the climate then the sound disappearsThis still only happens when standing still and in drive or reverse - not in parking or neutral. Does anyone have an idea?

Perhaps its just the sound of money being slowly sucked from your wallet.

Maybe I am just cynical since I just had both the throttle body and torque converter replaced in the last 10 days. SE warranty covered it all though.

The symptom you are describing seems similar to the cyclical droning sound/vibration I was getting from the torque converter. Does the engine rpms slightly bounce in sync with the sound? Mine did.

Rothwell,
No the rpms is not bouncing. It is very strange that the sound goes away when I turn of the climate. Before I bought this one I test drove 3 others and 2 of them clearly had the tc problem - locking in and out of the tc at steady speed, and had a sharp shift from first to second, this one has none of those symptoms??
I will grab the mechanic and let him witness the sound - you know the service advisor might not have relayed the story correct (SA just says they can not dublicate the sound). I begine to think that the trans fluid just need to be changed which would be early at 48k.

Turning off the Climate Control turns off the air con compressor, so I reckon your 'whoosh' is related to refrigerant movement, maybe its expansion into the evaporator from the release valve, (which could be faulty), or you need a regas. Yes, it does leak out over time unlike your domestic refrigerator. If you read the owners manual you will probably find something about checking the air con about every 2 years. Sounds like you need to see an air con specialist.

04-and up xj dont use a compressor clutch in the a/c so in other words the it never turns off

the few a/c compressors that i have seen fail make a humming noise rather then a woosh??

Well it is somewhere between humming and whoosh sound, and actually the more I listen the more it is a rhymic humming sound. Does anyone have an idea why this is related to have the transmission in drive and reverse opposed to have it in park or neutral? It seems like it is related to the drag on the engine?

Well I should add that I also have a cooling fan coming on very frequently and the fan is on for 3-4min after I park the car every time, even if I turn off the car rigth as I come to a stop.
