Question Robust wheel nuts?

Hi

Where could I source stronger wheel nuts with a washer in the end like the originals, but which are better than the Jaguar manufacturer's, as the originals have a thing metal covering and they easily get damaged. Everytime I take my car for wheel alignment, I notice that the original wheel nuts get damaged, with their pentagon shape ends becoming rounded. Are there tougher nuts out there without thin metal covering?

I think every X350 owner would like to know the answer to that one ! I searched and searched the internet but came up with nothing.

I posted this a couple years ago...

I replaced all of mine with ones from a Mitsubishi Outlander. They do have the washer and are solid chromed steel. Only difference is the nut size is slightly larger but since the jag tire tool is crap as well I bought a better one in the correct size. I think they look way better than the jag ones. They fill the hole up better on the wheel, are not quite as tall, and have a round crown instead of flat.

Here is a pic of them installed.

And whole sets are cheap! You can get a whole set for the price of one from Jaguar.

Default Wow Rothwell, your car paintwork looks outstanding!

Your wheel nut picture showed a stunning segment of your car's paintwork! How old is your car and which polish do you use for the paintwork?

Well done, your car looks stunning!

I bought these off ebay

20 Lugs Chrome Lug Nuts 12x1.5 Mag Shank Style 13/16" Head Brand New | eBay

They are not plated like the OEM ones which to me is a plus - I had to use a small socket and hammer to get a few of my lugs off when the cladding came clean off and/or got rounded out.

The only issue with those new eBay ones are that the heads are larger then the original, which means that the factory tire iron will not be able to open those lugs. I had a fold-able universal cross style lug wrench and just threw that in with the spear and that makes up for it.

Today I began dismantling a 2004 XJ8. I began with the wheels, using a large snap-on 1/2 inch drive air gun I was surprised the lugs would not budge. I was able to get every wheel off except for 1 with a large breaker bar. On 2 of the lugs the cap portion of the lug broke clean off. Not sure what to do at this point. Any ideas?

The highlander lugs sounds like a great idea.

Option 1: if nut still usable to some extent, I normally use a traditional cross shape wheel spanner because of its pentagon shape, and a hammer. I first rotate the spanner to locate the nut's corners, and once the spanner and nut's shapes are aligned, I'd hammer the spanner into the nut softly to in order to recreate the shape and to tighten the spanner around the nut. Once spanner is tightly into the nut, I'd then start turning the nut to loosen it a bit. Once slightly loosened, I'd pull out the spanner while nut still on the wheel in order to ensure the nut doesn't get stuck on the spanner.

Option 2 (less preferred as it is messy and could exacerbate the issue): Use a long and tough screwdriver and hammer it in the middle of the nut to get some grip, then use a vice grip to turn the screw driver in order to attempt loosening the nut.

I've always succeeded with the first option, than the 2nd.

Good luck

If it will fit, a tool to remove rounded off bolts might work, they look like a socket with hardened gripping elements inside. I have seen them at Sears. Traditionally, heat is the solution, but it could damage the wheel. If you insulate the wheel area with foil faced plumbers heat shield , you may be able to torch the head with a small tip and some patience.

I switched all of my lug nuts for the Lexus lug nuts. ES 430, I think.
The shank is .5mm longer than the jaguar ones. It they do work fine.

I concur, Rothse, nice polish job!

I bought the Meguire cleaning stuff and my 10 year old XJ now looks like a showroom vehicle! Someone put a nasty scratch on my left hand front panel, and I suppose they were dazzled by my revitalised paintwork.

Thanks Rothwell, it works. I'll soon be visitng Lexus and Mitsubishi parts divisions for those lugs! Thanks to you all for the advice.
