RPM gauge clicking noise

RPM gauge clicking noise
Hello,
I notice that my 2004 VDP RPM indicator dial in the instrument cluster makes a faint clicking noise when the RPM drops. For example, with the car running in park, with the climate control off, and sound system off, give it a little gas to nudge the RPM needle up to 2000, then ease off the accelerator, and as the RPM speed returns to idle the decrease in the needle on the dial is accompanied by a rapid faint clicking sound.
Anyone have this? I asked my local mechanic, and he sat in the car as per my instructions, and confirmed by putting his ear near the RPM needle that the clicking noise is coming from the RPM dial, but is faint. He went and sat in another X350 to test, and said that car also made the same RPM clicking sound when listening for it, so he assumes it is just the design of the instrument cluster and to ignore it. The dials and readings are all accurate, just I never noticed this RPM dial noise before. Is this a normal X350 noise, or is there something not quite right with my RPM dial or instrument cluster?
Thanks

The cluster needles are controlled by little stepper motors which appear to be all
plastic, with plastic gears presumably, and I am guessing that they could
become a bit noisy with some wear.
Having said that when I have done a scan with SDD the software sets the
gauges to max and back to zero and when that happens it's quite noisy.
