Purchased a salvage yard radio to replace original unit with defective display. Radio picks up signals from local radio stations but there is no volume. Does this sound like a defective radio or does it need a code? the radio does not prompt for a code.

 

It won't be code, the radio would just sit there demanding a code.
What are you getting? Very faint sound that doesn't change with the volume control?

 

No volume at all, even at max volume. so I returned radio to salvage yard and ordered another from another salvage yard.

 

As Steve says, coded radios display the word CODE when you power them on.

No volume or no sound whatsoever, not even a hiss? If the latter, check the harness plug connections to the back of the radio.
