Default Which Scan Tool or Software?

Hello,

I recently purchased a 04 XJ8 with 4.2l and had my buddy hook up his dealer level tool called Auto Engenuity to the car and it didn’t work properly.

the vehicle would stall out when the software was running. I called AE to discuss and they said they were aware of the issue. They didn’t instill confidence in me to make the purchase of their hardware/software.

i plan on doing a lot of different work to my vehicle between the suspension and tranny and know I need to get a proper dealer level tool to take care of the projects I intend on doing.

can anyone please advise me towards the correct tool that will allow me to perform bidirectional communications with the vehicles modules and To perform dealer level diagnostics and repairs.. I already have a basic Bluetooth scan tool on my phone called Torque.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks,

dan

I would recommend jlr sdd for the more sophisticated stuff and iCarsoft i930 or the updated version for quick diagnostics beyond the standard ODBll readers.

Specifically jlr sdd v130. I run that version on a dedicated cheap but fast laptop.

Thanks John! Can you advise where you can find the SDD program?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Jaguar-Land...72.m2749.l2649

I just bought the above on Ebay.

I cannot vouch to its "validity" as I have not loaded it and tested it.

I made a mistake earlier. It is v131 that I use not 130.

When loading jlr sdd you can run up against all sorts of issues such as the validity of the actual operating system which can be tedious to solve as well as the fact you need to be able to "freeze" the date of your computer to August 2012 otherwise you end up locked out of your off-line" version of jlr sdd after about 30 days.

With mine I have successfully run the air suspension leveling software as well as the transmission flash.

You have to have a good battery support system to do this.

People in this forum have bricked modules using this software almost certainly due to not using it properly.

Dan,

I purchased an icarsoft i930 based on recommendations from this forum but I do NOT recommend it. It will not connect with the ECM so you can't do any diagnostics on the main computer module without another scanner tool. (I have confirmed this behavior with Barnett Davies at icarsoft. He says the i930 does not have enough memory to handle all the modules so the left out the ECM) I have read on the forum (and Barnett confirms) that the icarsoft LR V1.0 has the ability to read all the modules in one unit. I wish people on this forum would stop recommending the i930.

Enjoy your car. It's a magnificent piece of engineering.

Jeff

I rather recommend buying the set of two dsiks fromthe same dealer including the calibration files:
https://www.benl.ebay.be/itm/Jaguar-...sAAOSwdxVcMRzT
Without the calibration files, I think you cannot properly use the software as it cannot access the multiple data required.
I bought the set from that dealer years ago. Can trust the quality.
The quality of the dongle however may be the cause of issues, when it is a chinese clone. At your own risks... (better use the original)

I think the issue with the i930 is related to the 2004 model. Works with a 2006.

My mistake I missed the fact that the calibration files are not included with the listing I pointed out!

The seller is giving me a link to copy the calibration files.

It looks like JCalhoun has a 2005 SV8. I understand that there were a number of changes around 2003.5, for 2004 model year.

I'm looking at these scanners too. The LR II looks to be the best, but they are around $NZ 300. Does anyone have experience with this scanner?

I have 04 XJR I use a Rotunda VCM 1 with SDD v130 on a 32 bit dell laptop running Vista. Its a native load no virtual machine. Does dealer level diags. You have to keep the computer date within a couple days of 01/08/12 otherwise it wants to update. It has disabled on me once because i set date to 08/01 but I just closed it changed date to 1/8 and started program again. The VCM I got on Ebay for $290 and the SDD i found on here. It was like 7 zip type files.
I aslo have a cheap hand held that only displays the pcode numbers 5 digits and has 3 buttons. Works good for SEL light codes.
I also have a BAFX wireless but it dumps the car into total failure and it will not start when its plugged in. Works fine on my other not Jag cars.
I also had a icarsoft LRV2.0. The newest LRII. It would not scan the car using the OBDII function but it did show codes in the diagnostic function. Just not ideal gor a quick obd look. It did seem to communicate with most of the modules in the car but its one way communication.
navigating thru it was less than perfect lots of button clicking. When looking at live data and recording it would change from the values to N/A and back. When trying to look at recorded data on computer most values were recorded as N/A. This could have been an issue with my car but I sent it back. I was working with there customer support to figure if it was the unit or my car but after a few email they ghosted. Could be due to Virus stuff but i couldn't risk keeping a bad unit if it was that and not the car. I have had no issues with my Sdd and it doesn't show any faults for the ECM. I got the icarsoft on amazon $145 and had almost 30 days to return it. I did try to use it a lot during this time but same results. It did act funky on first plug in. It also locked up the car like the bafx and initially would not read the ECM. After a few times in and out of the socket it seemed to improve and it read it. I blamed this on my plug in obdii having only like 9 pins and the others not being used in several years as there is no dealers or real diag setups anywhere near me. I got the SDD setup before and running before i bought the VCM.

The 04 will not grant access to the engine module, listed with the 05 on the readers screen.
The number of run cycles since cleared is not available on the 04, but is on the 07.
Fuel level is not available on the 04, but is on the 07 if memory serves.
Unable to get any response by email, or phone, not happy about that.
But considering i got it for less than $60 out of pocket delivered, can't complain.
It is the cheapest reader they sell after all.

What about the Foxwell NT510 scanner, anyone have experience using this reader?
They are $129 delivered with one free car download,
Pretty good price if it does all they say it does.
Tests modules for function, programs, & reprograms them if possible.

On different Forum JagV8;
I was just looking to acquire all the information & view points available.
Many of us may not look at all the other model forums available on this site.
Trying to glean all the knowledge i can, for me, as well as for others, to help out when i can.
Seems anything i delve into, becomes a black hole for time and money.
Can't be that much different for many of us.

I have ordered a Foxwell NT530 for $150. The helpful assistant sent me a list showing that it will access and diagnose air suspension codes which is what I want specifically plus transmission and etc. I had to order it with Jag specific codes loaded to it, but additional car lines are $60-$80 each (as I read it) so it is expandable to more. I will try to remember to post a comment once I've tried it out.

Why is it so stuffing difficult to buy an adequate OBD scanner for this stuffing car?
(NOT a whine to either Jaguar or anyone here!)

What do the dealers use? And is it unavailable to us?

(make one mistake and you can scrogg your car, is what I've read here)

JEESUS some of them need Windows XP or something...
FORGET THE PRICE. What do dealers use?
My car has no current issues according to my Indy, but it would be nice to check independently. However, I'm buggered if I will buy some half-assed OBDII scanner, which seems to mean all of them?
--------------
And I've become aware of something else, some tools which claim to be able to alter the odometer. I mean, "correct the odometer" heh-heh. So whether this or any other car or marque, "Provenance" is the important word (as always of course). I thought winding odometers was limited to the 60's.
(you can't realistically back-wind an odometer here, because it's all recorded on the WOF's together with warnings if it went backwards)

I feel your frustration ChrisMills;
With an icarsoft i930, a Foxwell NT530, both Jaguar specific readers.
And a Launch that is a good general reader, i'm still unable to do much.
Without a designated laptop, with IDS,& SDD software, we are just not going to get where we want to be.
Seems that could run about a thousand US dollars, and yes i hear one can brick their vehicle.
