I have also never been an S Type fan. No offense to any S owners. X type is a great looking car but it's a disappointment in the chassis and refinement department. Not surprising since it's based on a Ford Mondeo/Contour.

IF I didn't have a wife and 4 children, I MIGHT have persuaded myself to purchase a 2006 XKR coupe, in Platinum with a charcoal interior.
Yes, I would also prefer to row the gears in my phat GT, but I'd make an exception for the XKR. Other than the BMW 850 cs/csi or a nice 1993-1995 928 GT/GTS, the pre-2007 XKR is the best big fat fast coupe ever. But even then, the XKR might not have won out over the XJR. OK I'm rambling. I'll stop

I guess if I got an older XKR, I could probably afford to buy both (it probably makes more sense than to trade one the Mustang in and lose a lot on the transfer). Can't you find them in the $10-15k range in pretty good shape?
