[QUOTE=heima;631949]So you have the beeping, this means the j-gate assembly is getting GND. Next question, is it getting 12 VDC? It will probably be different for your XJ, but the fuse on the s type for that 12 VDC is F15, a 5 amp fuse, in the primary junction fuse box. This fuse is also for the transmission control module and the generator.
Did a little digging and the nearest match is a fuse in the "Cabin Fuse Box", F33; Transmission Control, "J"-gate, generator.
Will check on that tomorrow, I was busy attempting to install 5 patio doors in my sun-room.

Solenoid is still in, removed the "plastic lock bracket". I did not remove the board since the shifter still works minus the lights. The board/combo goes for $100 - $200 on eBay.
Apparently the solenoid pushes on the cable the same time that it unlocks the shifter. The cable appears to go near the ignition switch.
I was surprised at how easy everything came apart once I located the instructions.

I'm having a similar problem...my shift knob is located on "P" but the "R" for reverse is illuminated. It happened last night while I was switching to reverse to back into the garage after work. The car won't even start. All electrical seems fine. It's not the transmission because we were able to tow it into the garage just fine.

I just had the same problem as you on New Year's Eve. I was able I move the shift lever but it would only go to reverse even though the lever moved all the way to drive. They told me in that thread that it was probably the screw that attaches the cable to the transmission. I am traveling in business and haven't had a chance to get it looked at. All electrical stuff works fine, but car won't start.
