Default Shifter buttons becoming tacky

Hello everyone, my 2007 Jaguar VDP has a S and slip button on the shifter console. They have become tacky and the black gunk gets on everything including seats and clothes. The buttons work but the tackyness has caused me to put masking tape over them until a solution is found. Of course Jag says they have to replace the entire assembly for $1000.00 and I do want the buttons to look decent. Has anyone come up with any solutions for this issue?

Maybe you could vinyl wrap them?

Its a couple of options, there are companies that will fix them but its probably more cost effective to buy some used from ebay.
It would be hard to diy this because of the lettering on the buttons, if you are happy with just black buttons then just spray paint them black

Apparently you cannot buy the buttons separate. Ebay only shows the full shifter. If you know of any other options, I would love it.

Thats is correct, but the shifter is pretty easy to change I believe.
Its electronic so no need to mess with shifter cables and adjustment.

Its about 500pounds new or about 100 on ebay.

How about spraying with clear acrylic paint.

These two buttons are galvanized, they are doing well as long as the owner does not overdo it with chemicals when cleaning the interior, especially using condensed ventilation and AC disinfectants. In excess, they can dissolve the sponges sealing the air ducts.
