Default Should the oil really be changed in an XJR X350?

Hi,

Due to put my XJR 4.2 Supercharged in for a service, 157K, though still like new.

This will be first service since purchasing the car so would like to clarify if the oil should be changed or not?

I previously read (though can't find thread) that on an XJR X350 supercharged you don't need to change the engine at all. This is contrary to what my garage has told me though, he says although it's difficult the V8 will need need a change. It's the supercharger oil that doesn't?

That being said, there isn't any oil top up cap that I can see, which makes me wonder if the 'no need' advice may hold some truth.

He mentioned that all new Audis say not to change oil either, though this isn't the case as they recommend it there too.

They quoted the following points to their service
  1. Remove & replace oil & filter
  2. Remove & replace engine air filter
  3. Remove & replace cabin air filter
  4. Remove & replace spark plugs
  5. Strip down & clean the front & rear brakes
  6. Check all fluid levels & tyre pressures

Would greatly appreciate any good advice here, especially if changing the oil could do more harm than good (sounds silly when I say that out loud, but but worth knowing before it's too late I suppose)

Thanks in advance guys

Jim

I presume you mean the transmission oil?

Absolutely it will need changing especially if it has 157k on it now! Way past due.

ZF, the transmission manufacturer recommends a change every 60-80k.

SC oil as well.

Confusing post?

But yes ALL oils need to be changed. SC oil, Engine oil and transmission oil.
At 157K miles the SC oil should have been done around 80K miles. It will be black and like tar at this late date.

Was that the question? Not sure.

And, of course, you must change the engine oil at regular intervals. On my 2007 non-SC 3 litre petrol the change is yearly or every 10k miles, whichever comes first.

Hello Jeely
I am an amateur mechanic, but there are two things that I know for sure. Even the best and most expensive oil ends up degrading with time and needs to be replaced. Also, anything with gears releases iron dust that needs to be removed before it may clogg everything. Automatic gearboxes are particularly sensitive to poor maintenance, and even though they may work perfectly for many miles, they tend to die suddenly and require thousands of Euros to be fixed.
I do not pay much attention to the intervals recommended by the manufacturer, and I always change the engine oil at 15.000 Km instead of 25.000. And I also change the automatic gearbox oil and filter every 70.000 Km.
I am not familiar with compressor oils, but I assume they also have to be changed at regular intervals.
