I would recommend that you test the circuit for power with a voltmeter, generally available at your local hardware store of building supply center. There should be 12 volts dc at the socket. A little corrosion will prevent the bulb from lighting up. You could try cleaning the sockets with a small screwdriver and sandpaper. power should be off when you clean the socket

I replaced the bulbs in mine with LEDS bulbs that I purchased from SuperBriteLeds.com.

Thanks ryejag, I'll pull out the volt meter next. The license plate bulbs were blown. Switched those out and all is well there. Still waiting on the vw part for one of the side markers and going to switch out all bulbs today. I'll check for 12 volts at the socket while I'm there. I'm encouraged that the plate lights worked. The previous owner had them set to on all the time judging from the settings and the heat damage inside. The highly corroded one had a cracked lens which had let in the water. Are the LEDs pretty commonly available at auto supply stores do you think?

I suspect you can purchase the LED bulbs locally, but you may pay a little more. The license plate bulbs can be upgraded as well and may in fact be the same bulb. I replace some of my side marker lights since they did not appear to be water tight due to heat damage.
I did try to find the VW sockets and only found sockets with 4 "teeth" to replace the Jaguar sockets with 3 "teeth"

In Post #1 of this thread I give the VW part number and the source where I found correct 3 "teeth" sockets. Did you try that vendor?

Cheers,

Don
