Default Smell of burning matches?

Driving along the interstate yesterday, sunshine and roses, when the cabin suddenly took on the sulphurous smell of lighting a kitchen match. I assumed it was environmental, so switched the A/C to recirculate, but the fragrance continued. That was immediately followed by an engine roughness and a Check Engine Light. Plugging in the device and inquiring about codes is my task for today, but I'm definitely down a cylinder, at least. Anyone else had the burning match smell?
I'll post later about the codes when I get to the workshop.

Sounds like a rich fuel condition or missing on one or more cylinders is running unburned fuel into one or both the catalytic converters. OR not. The other possibility is carbon clogging of the converter(s) which in turn causes O2 Sensor issues, poor running conditions. Either way I wouldn't think driving is a great idea until you determine the extent of the problem. Getting the code or codes is the most important thing you can do at this point, if there is in fact a code captured. You didn't say of the check engine light is present. I rraely see codes when it isn't but thats just my experience, others have run the gamut. Check in when you have more info.

So, the code comes up as a cylinder 4 misfire, same as it did 10 days ago on my F250 Super duty 5.4 liter V8. That was a simple fix, swapping out a new coilpack for old, and life is good once again. When I went to pull the coil from cyl 4 on the X350, after the bolt came out, I could only get the coil to come out about an inch, and then it hits a hard resistance, like the plastic housing is too big to come out through the hole. I unbolted the one in front of it, and got the same result. It will turn freely, but not pull out any further. What's up with that?
