Sport mode in XJR

Sport mode in XJR
I'd like to ask, when the sport mode is activated in the 2005 XJR, does it remain in sport mode after the car is shut off and subsequently restarted or does it default back to the normal mode and the sport mode have to be activated every time the car is started? I ask this as my car used to remember the mode but over the past month, it seems to intermittently default to the normal mode and not remain in sport mode, hence I'm trying to figure out if I have a problem looming. Thanks.

Hee, hee, hee.... the car is alive....:-)
I vaguely remember that when I first got my car, it would reset itself after I shut down the car (somewhat like the parking sensors and the traction control, except that they work the other way around, i.e. if you switch them off, they are automatically reactivated when you restart the car). Then after 1-2 weeks of ownership, it remained in whatever mode I left the car in and has been like that for the past year, so I thought I was mistaken. Now it seems to want to default back to the off mode, but intermittently.... so I'm thoroughly confused as to what is the correct thing, and more importantly, is anything about to go massively wrong.....

2008 XJR:
Stays in sport mode unless battery disconnected. Good.
Stability control turns itself on every time you start up. Not good.
Minor aside: These buttons are side by side. Sport mode is indicated by a red light within the button. Disengaging stability control turns on a slightly annoying amber indicator below the tach. Shoot whoever thought this up.
And while I am at it how was anyone stupid enough to have the lighted indicators showing what gear is selected by the left course of the shift lever placed on the right side of the level so you cannot see it at night.
