Default starter switch 2006 XJR

Ouch, I have a 2012 MB Sprinter Van which uses a bayonet key very much like the Jag key. Late last night, I wanted to start the Jag to open the sun roof, inserted the key and it would not go all the way in. Pulled on the key and with much effort, removed the key.......wrong key! Went into the house and got the correct key and now after inserting the correct key, it goes in but will not rotate and start the car.
Not sure what to do. Any ideas? The section on the dash pretty much encloses the back of the dash.

Hi Richard,

Sorry to hear about your trouble. If your MB key is the one I'm familiar with, it's similar in overall slender dimensions, but different in profile from the Jaguar Tibbe keys. It sounds as though you may have jammed one or more of the wafers inside the ignition lock cylinder. I wonder if it might be worth applying some lock lubricant to your correct Jaguar key, inserting it into the ignition lock, and gently working it in both directions to see if you can free things up. You may need to apply lubricant to the key a few times.

Below is a link showing the internal components of a Ford Tibbe lock, which may help you visualize what may be going wrong with your lock. The wafers are Part 5 in the diagram:

While doing some research awhile back I happened to run across "Ford Tibbe Picks." Below is one link, but if you'll google that term you'll find lots of sources. I don't know if that sort of tool can be sold to someone without a locksmith license, but it might allow you to determine if one or more specific wafers are jammed:

And here is a video showing how the tool is used:

A locksmith familiar with Ford Tibbe locks should be able to help. Hopefully others will have more ideas.

Please keep us informed.

Cheers,

Don
