Question Stripped Oilpan Drain Thread in 1996 XJ6

Does anybody know if there is an "Oversized Drain Plug" available for the aluminum oil pan that has the threads stripped? I would like to retap the oil pan and use another drain plug. I don't want to remove the pan and weld the drain up to retap it...just use a bigger drain plug.

Why not use a helicoil insert and original size drain plug?

What is the original thread size and how long of helicoil would I need? I won't have any transportation once I take the plug out so I need to get the helicoil, tap and installation tool before I remove the drain plug. Thanks so much.

Sorry I don't have that info---if you have thread gauge you could buy a new drain plug and measure it(according to the Parts manual it is M14)--from that you can see what helicoils are available, length and thread. If there is a wide range available then take a chance and measure the length of the thread in the oil pan

I must have been sleeping----why is a 1996 XJ6 in this section?

Default Drain Plug damage thread

I changed my oil and filter today using this thread as guidance ( VDP Oil Change) . Luckily I purchased a Dorman one of same spec that fitted. (DORMAN 090115 (090-115) Oil Drain Plug) as the pictures show the state of the old one.

The old drain plug nut was 16mm big, the Dolman one is 13mm (not a problem) but the thread sizes were exactly the same as was gthe entire length of the thread. It also comes with the rubber gasket too. Look at the state of the thread on that old nut. The new one went in quite well thankfully.

The oil filter was a Microguard one. I was going to open it up and check for filings and metal bits but didn't get the time. Microguard, Never heard of them to be honest.

I filled up 6.5qts of Mobile1 5W30 High Mileage Fully Synthetic oil (she's on 150k miles) which after a quick spin to warm up, bought the oil to exactly between the low and high marks on the dip stick.

The WIX 51228 Oil Filter fits fine.
