Default are these auto trans the same?

Hello
Would an automatic box from 2002 xj8 3.2 be the same as 2004 xj8 3.6

I want to swap the older one into my 2004 as trans is playing up

thanks

They're different transmissions. The 2002 is a 5-speed, the 2004 is a 6-speed. Controller electronics will be completely different.

I have had good success restoring the 6-speed ZF transmissions to proper operation by changing the pan/filter and connector sleeve, flushing the fluid, then using SDD to clear the adaptations and update the firmware to the latest version (2006).

Short of that, you should at the very least inspect for fluid leaks at the pan gasket, because low fluid will cause slipping. Also inspect for fluid in the electrical connector, which can cause various other malfunctions.

Cheers,

Don
