Default Time for a new transmission?

Well, I think I have a problem. Just purchased another Jaguar. 2005 Super V8. I can't stay away for some reason. Anyways this one has a gearbox fault and does not shift above what I believe is 3rd gear. At 50 MPH the RPMs is at 3000. at 70MPH RPMs is at 4k. I tried resetting the adaptions using IDS but codes came back right away and car still will still hold 3rd gear. It otherwise drives good. The codes stored in the TCM are P0730, P0735, P0783, P0706.

From my brief research, I'm more then likely in need of a rebuilt transmission? Came here for advice and knowledge. Should I, 1. filter & fluid & solenoid change. or 2. source a used transmission and install that. or 3. rebuild transmission?

Hi, it depends. What is the mileage of the tranny and what are your DIY options?

Great question! Mileage on the car is 157,500. From the carfax report the car seems to have been serviced very well, although I have zero records.

My DIY option is the filter & fluid change and access to Jaguar IDS to reset or flash the TCM.

Another possible DIY option is getting a used transmission from the junkyard pick apart but that might be too involved for me since I have not done a transmission swap before. There is a 2004 XJ8 that just showed up to a local pickapart near me of unknown mileage.

Ok, then I would try an "extended" oil change.
If you can do it yourself, you can also replace the sealing sleeves of the mechatronics. Oil and parts should be available for around $250, there are good tutorials online for the sealing sleeves.

I think there is a real chance of solving the problem that way and it is 250 bucks worth.
However, if you are unlucky and a bearing bush is so worn that it is no longer possible to build up enough oil pressure for the shifting process. This would not be solved with an oil service.

I had a transmission fault on my 2003 XJ 3.5L V8 at 150,000km.
It would fail to change out of 4th gear to higher gears when warm.
It was covid time, not easy to book it into a local shop for checking.
With a rush of blood to the head I took it out of the car and gave it to a friend 40km away who has a transmission shop.
It cost $2000 for parts and labour to strip and rebuild.
Friend said it was hardly worn at all in the area that usually fails on a ZF.
It turned out to be a faulty solenoid, an easy "in car" fix with either Chinese or German solenoid kit.

So do not rush into it. A good transmission shop can give a good idea what to do.

a constant 3-4 shift fault (P0783) is usually a smoked e clutch it has nothing to do with the pump to body seals. when it goes into fault mode all solenoids are commanded off.

check fluid level but keep your expectations low. i drove a car 300 miles, 3 quarts low and it was still able to make it into all gears. try getting in there manually and off the throttle

you can throw one of those “new” ebay 6r60 valve bodies slap your tcm in it and hope for the best. if it fails go buy a used trans out of a crashed x150 x250 and then swap over the mecha.

Ditto giving fluid/pan/mechatronics a go...

- Suggest first check trans fluid level
- Check the connector sleeve for seepage, connection integrity
- If, when you pull the pan its full of clutch debris, then suggest rebuild/replace
- If not, proceed with mechatronics...

Pretty tough gearboxes, though low fluid and plugged filters will kill 'em. Beware that JLR service interval on fluid/filters was "never required". This was truly bad guidance. ZF now says 50K miles. ZF Chicago is best source for rebuilt units, last time I checked.

My X358 (approx. 160k at the time) started acting funky one day - trans sort of 'slipped' and then sluggishly clunked into gear and reverse was worse. Took it to a local trans shop and they diagnosed a leaking pan and low fluid level. They removed, cleaned and reinstalled the pan, filled it up with the magic fluid XF requires and it has been fine ever since. I think it cost about $100 total.

I had problems with my 2004 XJR transmission after changing the trans fluid. I ended up replacing all of the solenoids and seals with parts that I got from these guys - https://www.thectsc.com/ .
I have no relationship to the company but was very satisfied with my transaction. So with these new parts and two sets of fluid and filters my 2004 XJR trans has been working well now for several thousand miles.

I should add that I looked at the clutch plates when the transmission was open and saw that it was not burnt at all.

Thanks for everyone’s reply’s! So I’m assuming parts to do a fluid change is about ~$250 plus all the solenoids which is another ~$250. So $500 for a maybe fix.

I’m going to call a transmission shop that a local British shop recommends today and see what price that can quote for a rebuild.

Okay so I spoke with a transmission shop and they said it can be anywhere from $4,000 to $8,000 for a rebuild. If they could even source the parts because I guess they are not readily available like they used to be. Scary pricey. I will need to reevaluate my options.

They did say they could install a transmission for about $1,000 in labor if I can find a used unit.

Prolly shouldn’t of bought this car 🙃

Parts are not hard to find so if they are saying "if we could even source parts" I would find another shop. The zf 6hp26 goes back to 2000 and are used in BMW, Jaguar, Ford / Lincoln, Maserati, Kia, Hyundai, and Land Rover. Purchasing a rebuild is about 4K+ You can find used ones for sale on ebay etc. for $700+ but would have to pay shipping. You may be able to find a used one local or from a pick-a-part yard. Before buying a used one I would replace fluid, solenoids and sleeve.

The shop I called was referred to me by a local British automotive shop. The gentleman I spoke to was saying after COVID parts are hard to find. He mentioned a new Valve body being $1,300, I mentioned using the 6r60 valve body but he said that was not compatible? But from my research it should work.

There is a pickapart near me that has a 2004 jaguar XJ8 which has 105k miles on it I believe. I’m considering getting this part for $200 which I would have to remove on my own, and then having someone install it into my car. How do I verify that this transmission will be a direct replacement for my car? Will the torque converter etc all swap over? Thank you!

According to these threads SC and NA 6HP26 transmissions may be different.
XJ8 Trans Valve body into an R - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum
XRJ 4.2 SC 2003 to other x350 parts interchangeability - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum
(there is a LOT of potential reading on this forum!)

Fortunately, a Super V8 is surely worth recovering.

Okay shoot well the pickapart used XJ8 transmission is no longer an option now that I know it isn’t compatible.

Maybe I can just take the solenoids off of the used XJ8 and try that?

or buy the 6r60 valve body that xalty posted.

Did you read through all the transmission threads?
I only got aways through and fell asleep...which caused nightmares...
I seem to recall there was a possibility of things being not-so-bad. Provided it's daytime.

You could just not put your foot down on your Jaguargini, says me with a V6.
(I'm skeptical there's a difference. Not the SCV8 vs V6 silly, I mean the transmission. But several reliable people have said so)

A rebuild like you were offered seems worst case. After all, they don't know what's wrong and have to guarantee it.
I was told (by my plumber replacing a hot water cylinder what does this have to do with Jags) NOT to get a quote because then his company had to cover every eventuality. He was right in my case, at the risk of being exposed to open-endedness, would depend if you trust your Indy.
(Or find out who this Xalty is, he'll do it for a cinch )

The TCM and the torque converter are the differences between the xj8 and super 8. If the TCM is bad in yours then you would need another and have it flashed to your vehicle.

Mine xj8 4,2 has 348.000km 215,00miles
tranny oil change once at 125.000km
Second at probably 300.000km
third now snd probably last one with 340.000 km
pan filter 7liter of oil plus sleeves behind mechatronic an wire connector.
How about trying that plus s package witch all new solenoids . You might be good to go . After all not you should spending 4000 bucks to whom ever thinks he has knowledge of an automatic transmission.
there ar Zf centers around the globe
