Default Tires installed backwards?? RESOLVED

Hello All,

Today while getting my first inspection on my 2008 VDP the mechanic told me that three of my four tires were mounted backwards. Meaning the inside was on the outside.

I never heard of "backwards tires" before. Is this something to be concerned about?

Cheers!
Chris

If your mechanic is correct then yes I would be concerned about it. Directional tyres have to be fitted according to the "direction" the manufacturer intended.

I would be heading back to whoever fitted them/or a tyre (tire) service quickly.

It depends on the tire and pattern. Many tire manufacturers that build a more performnce tire have a outer shoulder designed to give better cornering abilty. This obviosly should be mounted out for best performance. But is not the same as a directional tire pattern thats designed to improve water channeling and is usually a forward facing ">>>>" vs mounted backwards or wrong side of car "<<<"

Beware, the thread on backward mounted directional tires can tear apart over time.

Maybe if Chris told us exactly what tyres he has,or a Pic of the sidewall would produce a better diagnosis of Performance versus Directional.

A Directional tire running backwards has little adhesion on a wet road. Our Insurance would not honour a claim should there be an accident (heaven forbid) and it was found Directional tyres incorrectly fitted.

Wow. Thanks guys. Getting them changed ASAP. They came from the dealer in Texas that way. Can't do a 2000 mi ride, so I'm having my local tire shop handle. Thanks for the responses!!!

Next time, I'll post pics.

Cheers!
Chris
