Default Trans Change Help

Hi guys. I own a 2005 Jaguar Super V8 with about 100k miles. I recently noticed some jerking in the transmission and found that the pan was leaking and the level was low. I picked up a new trans pan and 10 liters of ATF 6 from FCP Euro. The issue I'm having is I fill the vehicle up to where it seems to be at the right level and everything runs smooth. But then the car cools and a few hours later it's back to jumping on me. I've never worked with a sealed transmission before, so admittedly it's very different, especially with trying to monitor the fluid level temperature. I figure I lost about half a liter in the process. So I got 9 to 9 and a half liters in there. I've seen people throw out different numbers for how many quarts it holds, but I arrived at 9. Still, I have to be low for the problem to keep reoccurring upon cooling. I don't want to overfill. How many liters did it take for you guys who have done the change? I know the info is on the board here, but I just keep seeing varying numbers and am concerned about overfill. Many thanks in advance!

The transmission in your car, if I am not mistaken is ZF6HP24. It is used also in BMW, landrover, Fords among others. It is similar to ZF6HP26 but there are some important differences.
I would adise you to watch fw utube videos on oil changes and other services of these transmissions.
There are some peculiarities on procedures and filling up transmission fluids.
This guy seems to have good collection of videos on servicing ZF transmissions.
Next next video is walking throufh step-by-step. I just can't recomend using power tools to remove/install screws from/into aluminum body.
There are tons of videos on the subject

Hi Big Koshka,

As far as I know, the ZF 6HP26 was used in all 4.2L X350s from 2003 through 2009. I am not aware of a ZF transmission with the model number 6HP24. Are you thinking of the older 5HP24 5-speed or 4HP24 4-speed?

Cheers,

Don

I'm gonna have to finish it up tomorrow. I fear I've overfilled it. Has anyone else put 9 liters in? That seems like a ton of fluid for just a pan drop.

Hi oleschoolb,

The published transmission fluid capacity for the normally-aspirated cars is 9.5 liters / 10 quarts, and for the supercharged cars, 10.05 liters / 10.6 quarts. But to a great degree, the volume required to refill the transmission depends on how much of the old fluid you were able to drain out. If you only removed the pan, a significant amount of fluid will remain in the torque converter and valve body.

Measuring the fluid temperature accurately is critical to acheiving the correct fluid level. If you use an infrared thermometer, be sure to aim it at the fluid emerging from the fill hole and not at the pan. Plastic is a poor conductor of heat, so the pan external temperature can be significantly cooler than the fluid. By the time the pan reaches 40°C / 104°F, the fluid can be considerably hotter, which will result in a fluid level that is too low. I usually begin reinstalling the fill plug when the fluid temperature reaches 38°C and is trickling out, since it usually takes some fiddling to get the plug in. This way, by the time the fluid reaches 40°C, I have just started to thread the plug in.

A few other possible issues come to mind. Oil contamination of the Mechatronic electrical connector is very common due to failure of the sealing sleeve. Also, cracked or compressed valve body bridge seal and tubular seals can result in a loss of internal fluid pressure, which can affect transmission performance. To replace the connector sleeve and valve body seals, you would have to drop the pan again.

Another possibility is that your Mechatronic needs to be updated to the latest firmware. This requires a suitable version of Jaguar IDS or SDD, the dealership-level diagnostic systems. My recollection is that the latest update for the 6HP26 was done sometime in 2005, but if your car was built prior to the release of the update, it might benefit from the new firmware, which addressed some rough shift issues and has helped several transmissions I have updated.

Cheers,

Don

I was typing my previous message while you posted this. Yes, 9 liters is a lot for just a pan drop. How did you measure the fluid temperature?

Off the top of my head, when I drain the fluid and drop the pan, I get around 4 to 5.5 quarts of fluid. You might get even more if the pan was left off overnight.

Thanks, Don. I did have a pan leak, which is what prompted me to do the pan/fluid replacement. But I don't suppose that would matter one way or another, since the pan was dropped anyway.
I have been using a tablet connected to the car so I can monitor it while under. But as I said, I've never worked with a sealed transmission, much less one that was quite so finicky, I think I was probably trying to do too much at once, without a helper, and didn't keep track of the fluid temperature accurately enough. At this point, I think what I'm experiencing may be due to overfill? The car drove great after I finished, but then I let it sit for a couple hours and when I went back to start it, it immediately jerked going into reverse and went into restricted performance. I shut it down right then.

Ion all the x350/x356/ x358 transmission is a Zf 6hp26
New pan with filter and seal plus new screws and electrical connector sleeve are essential. BY just dropping pan
A 7 liters kit would be used ..
Get additional tubular rubber seals and bridge seal as a kit.
Drop the mechatronic cassette change those . Change the electrical connector sleeve put the mechatronic cassette back in. New Pan with filter an new screws, respect tightening pattern
fill up tranny till it runs out. Car Has to be level.
start engine . Run through the gear positions continue to fill up an let drip out constantly till you Oil coming out has 40degrees / 100F themp the stop filling up wait till there is barely anything coming out( still40degrees C/ 104 F)
then close the fillerhole.
The car will learn again automaticly over the next couple of 100 miles. Or do a reflash over Sdd
mine has 353t km first tranny.
What could be exchanged as well are the solenoids specificly for Zf6hp26. Cost about 300
Kit for oilchange prefer Zf with lifeguard 6 oil.
if you want to have a flush done you would need about 13 liters . So the torque converter oil is beiing changed as well.

Hi, Don,
I am wrong quoting "ZF6HP24".
What I learned is that there are some differences in components:
-valve sealing tubes

I asked Ericksons if listed below will fit my car:
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/2-5...ve-24107520715
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/2-0...ve-24107519315
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...mm-24107520715

The answer was:

-mecatronics sleve there are two different ones: one causing difficulties latching in place
-bridge seal have two different heights
All the above settled in my mind as two different transmission models

Regards,

Hi Big Koshka,

This snip from a CTSC document shows the differences between the bridge seal for the 6HP19 and 21 and the seal for the 6HP26, 28 and 32. Reportedly, some suppliers have mistakenly supplied the taller 19-21 seal to customers with 26-28-32 transmissions.

Cheers,

Don

Hi, Don!
Yes, Yes, I did not remember where did I see this information!
Here is clip about mechatronics sleeve, I am not sure if this is a well known fact:

I have purchased these parts from FCP Euro in the past, but they appear to be out of stock. Try the California Transmission Supply Co. ( thectsc.com ), an authorized ZF parts dealer.

Update: (would love input) After I put the fluid in and took it for a test drive it felt great. No issues whatsoever. I let it sit in the driveway overnight and when I started it up, it started lurching or searching for gear. As soon as it put it in reverse it popped a trans fault and went into limp mode, so I shut it down.

I checked fluid level again the next day and it seemed low, so I repeated the process for adding fluid. Again, car felt and drove great. So fluid was low, right? Not so fast. I let it sit again and the SAME ISSUE, lurch and limp home mode. Is there now TOO much fluid? Maybe. But why was it running smooth right after fill? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

If the transmission goes into limp mode, one or more diagnostic trouble codes should be stored. Many issues can trigger limp mode, including non-transmission issues with an ABS wheel speed sensor, MAFS, etc.

Since you did not replace the electrical connector sleeve, have you disconnected the harness from the Mechatronic and inspected the two halves of the connector for oil contamination?

Cheers,

Don
