Transmission Oil Change Options
My Jag has 54K miles and I just found a weeping tranmission oil leak while I was doing engine oil change. I am fully understand the process of replacing the oil pan, sleve, and refill the correct volume of oil at the correct temperature.
However, I really want to bring the Jag to a dealer to have all the oil in the system flushed which had been dicussed in one of the sticky thread.
Would be wise to collect the drained oil in a clean tub, install new oil pan and sleeve, temporarely refill with captured old oil, and drive to to a dealer for a complete flush? I do no want to waste 6 liters of expensive oil if I do not have to.

my two cents, have the dealership do both or at least get a quote. If you already have the parts, it's not much labor. I just don't see you saving much money. Shops will use your parts, but won't warranty the work.
The rest (full flush) you're going to pay for anyway.
But more specifically to your question, if you drain the fluid and put it into glass, let it settle and you should know if you have any metal shavings. sweep the bottom with a magnet. Metal will also be on the magnets inside the old pan.
So no metal, your not going to ruin anything by putting back in the old oil and taking it to the shop. Your filter won't get that dirty that fast. Of course, if the oil is black and filthy, I'd still add new.

My fluid was toast so I flushed it completely. I had a 2-3 quart low issue from a leak and the fluid didn't seem to fair well with that condition. Honestly you are at ZF's recommended mileage for a filter, drain and fill. That's what I'd do if the fluid coming out was otherwise fine. I had to flush since I had no choice but to switch to Mercon SP as it was the only thing I could get locally that was known as a successful substitute without keeping my car down for a week.
I still need to do the pan and sleeve, but with fresh fluid in mine now I'm going to wait 15k miles and do a pan change, drain and fill with Mercon SP instead of another flush.
