Transmission or torque converter noise

I recently purchased my 2004 XJR with 40k miles on it. After a few weeks I noticed a very slight knocking / ticking noise coming from either the transmission or torque converter. I first thought it was something else but it only does it when the car is in gear and not neutral or park. It is ever so slight but still enough to bother me. Has anyone else had this noise before? I have heard that a common problem with the 2004 was the torque converter going bad but then I found out that a replacement part is the same as the 2005 through 2008 models as well. If anyone has had this problem, did you fix it yourself? And, if so, where did you get the replacement torque converter besides the dealer? If you went to the dealer, what do they charge for something like that? I have worked on cars all of my life and I really hate to tear into this Jag but I guess it's just like everything else when it comes down to it. Please help, I really don't want to be the guy on the side of the road with a beautiful non-running originally $75k car.
