It sounds like there is a sensor of some kind in the latch mechanism so it knows when the boot lid is latched. This may be broken or a wire connection is loose, or it needs re-setting to detect the bootlid position, (I suspect the latter). Have you lifted anything heavy into the trunk and let it rest on the mechanism momentarily.

Default Trunk latch

I have a 2007 XJ8 that has started having a similar problem. About 20% of the time when I try to open the trunk with any of the buttons(fob, dash, trunk) the trunk lid will raise like it is open but I cannot lift the lid. It seems as though something is caught. I can push the lid down and the motor will engage and shut the trunk and usually it will keep hanging once it starts. If it works then I can open and close the trunk 10 times with no problem. I am about to take it in for routine service soon but I would appreciate any advice.

It's probably the microswitch that tells the latch its open or closed. It's part of the latch mechanism.

Looks like this may become one of those common issues with age/wear.

For the record I wanted to report that the dealer ended up replacing the motorized trunk latch on my 2007 XJ8. The issue with the trunk popping up but not being fully released got worse by the day until it was happening about half the time. All seems to be well now and the motor seems to have a stronger sound when it opens the latch. All repaired under warranty with 40k miles on the clock.

Default Latch

I haven't seen this as yet, but have only had the car a month. Have to keep an eye on it.

I think i have a similar issue with my trunk. In order for me to open the trunk, i need to go to the back press the circle on the trunk, and at the same time pull up. If i decide to press the button, and then pull, the trunk is stuck.

I have a 2009 XF and i keep getting the warning light that the trunk is still open. i relaced the latch and the remote and latch botton inside the vehilce still work properly, however the warning light is still comimg on. So before i head over to the Jag dealer to pay them my wife's arm and leg (who slammed the trunk closed causing this issue) anyone have a possible solution?

Thumbs up

i would determine what tells the body computer the trunk is pe.
it must be some type of switch/device'

then check it.
it may be dislodged from the slamming of the trunk or something with its connector/wiring thus giving a false report to the body computer/module.

Had similar issues as the OP along with random car alarm going off. Seeing how basic the trunk latch system is, only having three main parts my bet was on the latch mechanism. Especially given the number of times my wife has slammed the boot lid forgetting it has a soft close feature (something she wasn't used to). Of course her new car, a 2012 Mercedes E350 has auto close with a simple push of a button and she still slams it shot
So on Monday I replaced the latch with new unit from Gaudin Jaguar. The whole job took about 30 minutes and seems to have fixed the problem (time will tell). Now all I need to do is keep the wife away from it, LOL!!
