But what's the big deal? The air spring/dampers are fairly easy to remove. Just disconnect the air hose and ECATS electrical connector, disconnect the anti-sway bar link, remove the lower shock bolt, remove three of the four nuts that secure the air spring to the suspension tower and loosen but do not remove the fourth nut, step on the lower control arm and lift the bottom of the shock over the arm, then while holding the air spring/damper with one hand, reach up with the other and remove the remaining nut, then lower the unit out of the car.

Awesome! thanks Don I really appreciate it. That is actually the answer I was looking for

On the other hand my problem are the Ball Joins not the control arm bushings. If I can find a way to replace them without getting the control arms out that would be great.

It seems that the wheel bearing hub assembly on my 04 had to be removed, to remove the ball joint.
The 07's were different, and could be changed without the hub assembly being removed.
But replaced them while i was there, a little less than $80 a set delivered, with new ABS sensors included.
Both of mine were removed, was not that bad a job at all

As far as I can recall, the upper ball joints are not replaceable, or at least not with standard shop equipment, which is one of the reasons we all just replace the upper control arm/ball joint assemblies. The other reason is that it's not easy to determine the condition of your upper control arm bushings until you remove them, and by the time you've done that you may as well replace them.

You are right Don, I would have to buy the ball join extractor and the ball joins for both sides and with that money I can just buy the control arms from ebay or Amazon.

Thanks.

My next job would be replacing the rear tie rod bars. I have uneven tire wear from the inside of the rear right passenger side tire.

As far as I know, you cannot replace the upper control arm ball joints with a standard ball joint extractor tool, or even with a hydraulic press and standard cups. If you could, many of us would have done it already. The thin control arm ring around the ball joint provides insufficient bearing surface for a cup or socket to support the arm while the ball joint is pressed out. Replacing the control arms is really the only option.

Cheers,

Don

Hi David,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us!

I have deleted your personal contact info from your post in a public forum. Please use Private Messaging to contact other members on the forum. Note that we have not heard from NDW in three years, and I suspect he was remembering replacement of his lower control arms without removing the air spring/damper units. I don't know how he could have replaced the upper control arms without replacing the air springs/dampers.

Please visit the New Member Area - Intro a MUST and post a required introduction so we can learn something about you and your Jaguar and give you a proper welcome.

Also, please visit your User Control Panel and add the year, model and engine details of your Jaguar to your signature line so they show up in all of your posts.

Cheers,

Don
