Default Valley hose or Coolant pump?

Hello,

Need some guidance, 2005 Super V8 with 111,000 miles. Bought it with 97K Miles and prior history unknown, been slowly chipping away fixing issues and this forum has been of great help!

Today driving home in 104 degree weather, noticed steady stream of coolant leak from front center of the engine, it dumped what I would think most of the coolant in about 10 minutes. Luckily the car was pulling into the garage so did not overheat.

From the valley hose leak forum posts, it appears that when the valley hose leaks coolant is observed draining from the rear vs the front of engine. If that is correct then would this be a likely water pump failure or possibly a non-easily accessible hose rupture?

Vehicle has had a slow coolant leak for months that I was unable to track down as there was no fluid leaking on the floor and all visual hoses were dry.

Wanted to report back that it was the water pump after all. Looks like what others have noted is true, if coolant leaks from rear of engine it is likely the valley hose, if in the front it is the water pump (assuming all the hoses are ruled out).

My N/A had a slow leak but it was coming from a split plastic thermostat housing and running down the front of the engine onto the water pump which subsequently threw the coolant all over the front of the engine, belt and pulleys. Made a total mess. Hopefully you'll sort yours with a new water pump.

Glad you got to the bottom of it without too much suffering. Can you let us know what water pump you sourced? There are quite a few out there ranging from $29 to $250 for an OEM part (Which I believe Jaguar no longer sources from the original manufacturer, but from one of the current aftermarket ones, if so making it a poor value for 10x the cost.

I ask because I am about to do Serpentine belt, thermostat housing/thermostat, idler pulley and complete tensioner assembly, most hoses and so on, just to knock off all the mechanical cooling parts. I have been stuck on the water pump because the available ones either have a paper gasket (vs. the OEM metal/rubber one) and no O-ring. OR they have the right gasket but use a metal impeller which logic would indicate is desirable. However stories of cavitation from the OAT-based antifreeze Jaguar specifies and just the fact that the plastic impeller one went 170k miles in my previous car (as would have gone further, if the car didn't literally have the front end explode and burn) a consequence of a 75 MPH "meeting" with a stopped truck with no lights on on a state highway. So I am sticking with plastic impeller, but not sure what is the best choice of replacements. If you could describe your new water pump I would appreciate it. Thanks!

I used Jaguar ORM pump, no issues. Metal impeller and OAT coolant not a good mix. Your going to have to eventually get that valley hose changed out, along with all other hoses and knock sensors.

I sourced the pump locally from Oreilly's for $106. It has the paper gasket and a plastic impeller with lifetime warranty https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b...cp4124/4381837

There were way cheaper and other options online but i wanted to get it wrapped up over the weekend.

Agree on eventually having to replace the valley hose and all other hoses, currently goal is to fix other pressing issues, have had the car for a year and a half and have spent about $4K in suspension work. Tires being replaced tomorrow. Needs new steering rack, suspension is stuck in firm mode (hunting ebay for icarsoft LR II deals to capture chassis codes), rework of brembo brakes/roters and new engine /transmission mounts to get it driving like it should. No complaints at all as this was all expected expense.

Once it is mechanically healthy then will work on the cosmetic fixes, exterior clear coat issues on the passenger doors, headliner replacement and if budget permits better wheels.

Frank
