Default Valve Covers: To Change gaskets Or Not?

Time factor notwithstanding, while I have Supercharger off, I’m thinking of changing the valve cover gaskets. I will look again, but I don’t see any signs of leaking.

I am seeing slight leaking seemingly from the oil pan. I attribute this to my having recently (2 years ago) replaced the oil pan gasket. However, lately several have suggested that I look at other places as well, which I will in due course. Also, I see grime on the front of the engine from the water pump down; however, this, too, is a subject for another day.

Question: If oil pan gaskets aren’t leaking at 92K miles, would you replace them anyway? Is it uncommon to have no leaks at 150K miles? 200K miles?

If it is common for them to leak by 150K miles, I’m inclined to replace them. If it is unlikely for them to leak at 150 if they’re good at 92K, then I’m inclined to leave alone.

All help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you & Happy Mother’s Day!

Hi Steve,

when I bought my SV8 almost 6 years ago, it had 175,000 km on the clock (roughly 110kmiles, if I am not mistaken), and there were some (minor) leaks from the valve cover gaskets, also in the spark plug wells, so I replaced them at the time.

I have just replaced the oil pan gasket and the oil filter flange gaskets today, hopefully this will cure the leaks that were there. The car now has 225,000 km (140kmiles) on the clock. Next will be the transmission cooler lines and the power steering lines...

Best regards,

Thomas

Thanks, Thomas!

I may have partially answered my own question with the picture below. Note the "trail" from the bottom of the valve cover down to the front of the engine. If this is a leak, I will replace. I don't see how it could be coming from elsewhere? & of course, I will replace both. & Thomas, thanks for the reminder about the other things! "transmission cooler lines and the power steering lines..." - Relish the thought!!
