Default Vehicle too low - compressor not running

HI all,

I have read through several threads regarding the vehicle too low message but I seem to have a different problem. I had garaged the car for about 7 weeks here in Mobile AL and when I returned the car was sitting WAY low and I had the error message. The car was fine when garaged. I have since checked the fuses (found 3 that relate to the air susp system) they are all good. I have driven the car down the road and back hoping it would raise but nothing. I cannot here the compressor running! Any help would be appreciated I am going to get a code scanner today and check if there are any errors.

The car is a 2005 VDP with 65k miles.
Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,

First of all, a standard OBDII scanner can read most of the Powertrain (P) codes, but it cannot read the Jaguar-proprietary Chassis (C), Body (B) and Undefined (U, mostly Network-related) codes which tend to be the ones triggered by air suspension faults. So you will need to visit either a Jaguar dealer or an independent mechanic who has a system that can read Jag codes.

If you have a voltmeter, there are some basic tests you can perform yourself:

With the key in Position II (Ignition On), check for 12V between Pin 3 of the socket for Relay 1 (R1) in the Front Power Distribution Fuse Box and ground. This is the Air Suspension Relay that powers the compressor, and it should have 12V on Pin 3 anytime the ignition is on.

Also check the compressor fuse, Fuse 6 (40A) in that same fuse box.

At the compressor electrical connector, check for 12V between the red wire and ground within the first minute or two after the car first starts. There may be a delay before the 12V appears. That will tell you if the relay is sending power to the compressor motor. The R1 relays have been known to fail. Thus far, I don't know of any reports of a compressor motor failing.

The compressor motor is grounded/earthed at the ground stud behind the left front headlamp. The ground studs, wire terminals and nuts are all aluminum and are known to corrode or loosen. Remove the nut and wire terminals and clean them and the threaded stud with a soft brass brush and zero-residue electrical contact cleaner spray, then reassemble, noting that the torque specification for the nut is only 6.5 ft. lbs., which is barely tighter than "snug." Several members have accidentally snapped the threaded stud off of the body by overtightening the nut, so take care.

You can download the Air Suspension section from the Dealer Training Manual free from this forum at this link:

And you can download the 2005 X350 Electrical Guide at the link below (the Air Suspension schematic is shown in Figure 05.3):

Cheers,

Don

When you drove the car down the road, how long were you driving for?

I would try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes.
