What DON'T you like about your XJ

Over all, I love the car. The only real complaint I have is the chair side bolsters are not adjustable and cut off the blood circulation in my legs. I am toying with the idea of a piece of 1/2 inch thick piece of dense foam to help make the seat more flat all the way across.
On long trips I have to fold towels and place them in the center of the seat to raise my seating position relative to the side bolsters. Otherwise I get severe leg pain after 2 or 3 days of driving on a long trip. Bad design.

I have fixed most of the gripes only 2 left
1 stupid locking of the doors when engaging gears and
2 seats don't go far enough back feels like I'm sitting under the steering wheel and it gets painful on long trips also cant get my feet under the pedals and when I do its near impossible to get them out in a hurry
I think I might be able to get the seats going back further thats my next exercise had to do it on myb XJR6 the seat bottoms are a bit uncomfortable but Ill break them In LOL

The doors
After driving Japanese cars for 20 years - with their lightweight and tinny construction, one of the first things I noticed when I got my X-Type 5 years ago was the nice satisfying thunk when you close the doors - they are nicely weighted and balanced, and the sheetmetal doesn't flex every time you lean on any part of the car like a beer can.
But on my '04 XJR, all four doors are stiff, and you basically have to push them all the way closed. I suppose the lighter weight of the aluminum has some effect, but still, its annoying. The hinges aren't readily accessible to apply some lube either.

Very few things
Having only owned my XJ for a little over a month, I am still on my honeymoon with my Jag.
Also, I don't feel right complaining about a $62k car that I was able to purchase for less than a tenth of its original price.
But... the only things I can fault are really picky.
1. The odometer LCD light is so dim I cannot read it at night.
2. I can't seem to get the squeak out of the front doors when opening.
3. I can't get the tarnish off the aluminum window trim (I understand it is plastic coated).
4. I wish it was easier to remove that ugly black front license bracket (We don't have front tags in Florida).
That's all I can think of!
The list of things I love about this car is much, much longer. That is a (sticky) thread I would like to see.

X350 do have an engineering test mode. It is activatet just like on a S-type - press a button on the left stalk, turn the ignition on, wait for a 10 seconds and release a button. It's a littly tricky at first time, but after some attempts you'll get used to it.

I can do it on my '07 XKR first time, every time.
#214
I've used it on my XJR many times, hold the trip reset, start the car, release after 3 seconds.
I used it to monitor the actual coolant temperature and the real speed compared to what the speedo shows.
But since getting the bluetooth dongle and Torque app on my phone, haven't needed it anymore...

The only difficulty is to measure 10 seconds before releasing a button. But after a while i've got used to it and now i can do it perfectly

And, since my BT dongle died and it's not comfortable to drive with SDD on a passenger seat, i'm using this mode from time to time.

2. Use some silicon spray on a door check arm
3. Use some Coca-Cola on them. It really helps a lot

I talked with my service rep about it and she confirmed that the 2006 and newer XJs do not have the ETM. Since your car is a 2004 it had the ETM.
#220
the ETM is available for:
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
S-TYPE
VIN:
M45255 Onwards
XJ Range
VIN:
G00442-X358 Introduction
X-TYPE
VIN:
C00344 Onwards
X358 was introduced in 2008. 2006-2007 X350 vehicles do have a ETM and i even used it while i was working at JLR Russia.
Here's a manual from that JTB (just got it from Topix):
New XJ (up-to X358) Instrument Cluster Self-Diagnostic ETM
To place the cluster in ETM, perform the following:
1. Press and hold the stalk trip cycle button whilst turning the ignition from position 0 to position II, until 'ENGINEERING TEST MODE’ is displayed on the RH Message Centre display. The stalk trip cycle button must be released within three seconds of 'ENGINEERING TEST MODE’ being displayed or the instrument cluster will exit Self-Diagnostic mode.
2. To navigate forward through the instrument cluster Self-Diagnostic Mode tests, press the trip computer ‘MLS/KMS’ button.
3. To navigate backward through the instrument cluster Self-Diagnostic Mode tests, press the trip computer ‘A/B’ button.
4. To exit Self-Diagnostic Mode, press the stalk trip cycle button for more than three seconds.
5. The Self-Diagnostic Mode is also deactivated when the ignition switch is turned to the 'OFF' position, or low battery voltage is detected.
6. If the Self-Diagnostic Mode cannot be accessed repeat the above paying particular care to the sequence timing. NOTE: ETM is not available on X358. If ETM is not available use IDS/WDS to diagnose the instrument cluster.
