What DON'T you like about your XJ

1.fit some redstuff pads...byebye brake dust
2.but a car where the previous owner has already taken the depreciation hit...mine was 2.5 yrs old when I bought it and it increased in value for the following 8 months with the scrappage allowance increasing the used prices
win/win situation

Auto dimming rear view mirrors that 1) do not dim enough, 2) do not react fast enough when lights from rear are intermittent e. g. winding or hilly roads. Inferior to what cars have had for the past half-century.
Hard stitching on drivers arm rest where I want to rest my knee.
A Nav system that tells me the nearest 3 Tim Horton's are all over 200 miles away. Also tells me the nearest Mobil station is 30 miles away not across the street where it has been for many years. Or is just generally counter-intuitive, poorly thought out, and probably designed by a mole from a competitor. This is true about the whole display based experience.
A temperature control system that probably has its sensor located in someone else's car. My 1993 Q45 could do it right.
No sun visor to deal with the center area between the two existing sun visors. My Q did and that was good.
Noisy Pirelli P6 tires. My previous car had Yokohama AVS DB. Very quiet. All seasons that were suicide in snow.
Low beam headlights that are brighter than necessary up close to dilate your pupils then a sudden cut off for near totally darkness beyond. Vastly inferior to anything I have had that I can remember.
Intermittent wipers that are totally unpredictable. They even work the way they should on very rare instances.
In 2 years I have never found the seating position that is just right. My 1982 Toyota Supra 8-way seat is near perfect.
The XJR does not have a heated steering wheel. I would very much like to have an independently adjustable heated steering wheel.
I hate, hate, hate the look of front fender vents. Gill covers belong on fishes not cars.
By now you will be totally surprised to know that I could make an equally long list of what I love about the car.

how could I forget:
Front windshield pillars + massive mirrors = effective pedestrian extermination.
The J-gate. With lighted selection indicators which are blocked from the drivers vision by the gear shift level. If anyone finds the semi-selectable shifting useful please tell me what you use it for.

What I don't like.
The trunk is smaller than I would like. I can only fit one whole body in there but have to Chop the second one up. Then there is no room for shovels. Fold down seats would be good for that. Now I'm limited to river dumpings rather than proper shallow graves.
The rear sensors aren't driver specific. The "beep beep" sounds work for me, but my wife needs a more straight forward "STOP DAMN IT!!!"verbal response.
There is no Tailgating Deterrent System. A couple of rocket launchers would help to prevent everyone behind me from trying to watch whatever is Pacifying my two year old on the entertainment system.
"AJAR" is what my Grandmother used to put cookies in. Some People use them to stash money they're trying to save. OK so maybe the door is Ajar. My daughter stashes half eaten Oreos in hers and my wife fills hers with receipts proving how much money she can't save. I do miss how the Mercedes would Just say "Door Open".
Comments from someone that has never even touched a Jag telling me how unreliable they are. I can only respond with a smile and a friendly "Wanna ride in it? Let's take a ride by the river."

Things that I don't like in my XJR
1) Trunk (boot) space is too shallow and the floor of the trunk (boot) is not flat.
2) Grey "wood" trim - much prefer the normal brown wood trim but the few XJR's I've seen here all have this same trim. If they wanted to do a high-tech look in black, maybe they should have used a carbon fibre trim instead. Couldn't help it since I bought the car used.
3) No sport mode indicator in the instrument display. Only the red led on the button and the butt dyno feel...
4) Automatic release of the hand-brake when the accelerator pedal is touched, even lightly...
5) Door / window / trim lines have just enough space to trap tiny leaves in them, which are a hassle to remove.
6) Would like a 10-12 disc CD changer instead of the standard 6. Is there an option available for this?
7) Slightly "floaty" feel to the suspension, makes it not feel as sure footed as a Benz. I had this tested by one of the UK Jaguar factory test drivers when he came in for a test day as I was trying to see if I needed to plan for a suspension replacement, but he said it was normal.
8) Front sensor going off whenever a vehicle moves by (motorcycle) in the adjacent lane when you're stopped.
9) The sole dealer doesn't necessarily carry all the usual wearing spares (e.g. water hose) resulting in the car being laid up for 1-2 weeks for a relatively minor issue.
10) Automatic wipers not coming on automatically after returning to the car after it has been rained on, and sometimes coming on when there's only a few drops (not even a light drizzle) of rain or when splashed by someone else's windshield washer fluid...
11) Automatic headlight sensors set too come on when there's just the slightest hint of shade...

Since we've had the car less than a week, it may be a bit premature to respond to this thread. But here are a few quick observations:
1 - agree with others about the blind spots. Didn't notice the pillars and headrests during a test drive. But they sure stand out now that we own it.
2 - getting the "Engine Malfunction" warning the day after week took delivery.
3 - it's my wifes car, not mine.

Is this thread still running ?
I suppose as I bought a 7-year old XJ6, I don't have too many complaints, it's just a terrific car, AND one previous owner who did 30k miles in it. I do get cross that the Satnav screen always asks if you accept the Conditions of Use. Why not just once, for heavens sake !

Well, I have a '97 LS400 Coach Edition and I am starting a new job (fresh out of grad school) so hopefully I can save up enough of a downpayment to buy a 350 XJ!
What is comforting to know is that not a single person (maybe I didn't read correctly) complained about any sort of equipment malfunction or failure. If I read correctly, the CATS system is mostly just poor calibration/design, not a mechanical failure.
Most of the problems I see don't even really turn me off from the car. I'll just lose some weight to fit in them seats!
I hope to get a 2005-2007 LWB VDP sedan, or maybe an XJR. You think next year, I'll be able to find one for around $25k in perfect shape with low miles (20-30k)?

XJ Dislikes
I wish I the LCD buttons were easier to reach. Navigation is a bit far away for safe use if driving. I also wish I could change the radio or CD tracks via the steering wheel. Also seems like there is brake dust on my wheels that makes them look dirty each day.
Agree on how low the seat is, the truck size and blind spots. Really need to be careful changing lanes.

Raise it up (switch at the side of the seat )

I bought mine used SIGHT UNSEEN from a dealer in North Carolina off of an ad on Ebay. Had a friend of mine drive down from Virginia to look at it for me....called me an said if I didn't buy it then he would. First luxury car ever for me.
My only real complaint with this car is the lack of an aux input for an Ipod. I added an H/K Ipod controller with an FM x-mitter. Good sound, not great, espically when I get bleed over from another station.
Other than that I have no real complaints with my Cat....I love it!

It makes me smile to see how many people have minor gripes about petty things, but still love the car - that's life people, gotta take the rough with the smooth, and boy, there's a lot more smooth with these cars.
I've got a few things I'd have done better;
Ignition key - that's a poor position and it's uncomfortably close to my right knee - you guys with the left hookers might not have the problem.
Audio - mp3 connectivity - at the very least it should accept CD's loaded with mp3s.
Audio - Premium sound sub - if this was the first audio kit from Alpine I'd ever heard, I'd never buy Alpine again.
Satnav - Poor, routing in the UK is frequently poor, no custom POI's.
I don't have an issue with the most common things already mentioned, I had an S-type before, so the trunk is an improvement - and I don't play golf :-)
I'm amazed you cars say Door Ajar, mine says door open?
None of this matters driving the open road, when that charger is spinning up and exhausts are growling, and everything else appears to be going backwards......

You should not see any of your car in the side mirrors.
Now if you are referring to the blind spot behind the A-pillar, can't fix that.
BTW, the track/ preset selector is on the side of the wheel, towards the left.

Very few complaints after nearly 2 years and 24k miles.....but here I go.....
1) Radio interface and readout is non-intuitive
2) chassis not nearly as "solid" or "hewn from a solid chunk of aluminum" as I had expected. Rolling across the (rare) extra-choppy pavement in Texas results in some rattles and a sense of "loosness" in the chassis & suspension I never experienced in various BMW's I've owned in the past. Even My VW GLI is much more solid feeling in potholes. That said, on 95% of the roads I travel, the car is poised and solid.
3) narrow seats - and I'm not a fat guy (fits my wife very well though)
4) road noise and noisy tires (Pirelli P-zero). Prectically eliminated when I recently re-shoed her with Hankook V-12 EVO's (really....EXCELLENT tires!)
That's it!

Hmm I don't like that the stereo doesn't play MP3s, do the 2008-09 models do that?
("at the very least it should accept CD's loaded with mp3s"...exactly)
Wouldn't mind more timber on the interior, yeah this sounds like a joke as the Jag has more than anything this side of a Rolls or Bentley, I just can't get enough
Fuel-filler door should release automatically as in German cars.
One-touch turn signal for lane changes " "
Lateral adjustment for sun visors " "
Definitely do NOT want a push-button start, for two reasons: 1) it's a fad and 2) there can be an issue with turning the engine off in your Lexus when experiencing unintended acceleration!
I'm 6'-3" tall and my right knee has never hit the ignition key. Don't know why others do..
And I totally love the concealed cup holders. Only visible when you need them. That's how it should be.
"Car need LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL !" Isn't that Traction Control?
"I'm amazed you cars say Door Ajar, mine says door open?" --too funny, I figured it was a Briticism...
"Loose suspension" --obviously, the car is softly sprung (actually air suspension of course) but I think the main thing is the aluminum body causing the car to weigh less than Benzes & BMWs. Makes it feel truly fleet and light on its feet but might surprise people accustomed to bricks.
The car is a dream though. One of my favorite (silly) things is the warning tone emitted when you try to lock the car from without and a door or the decklid is still partly ajar. The first time it happened I looked round to see if a Messerschmitt or Isetta was honking at me! Rockwall take note...

My rack and pinions is loose,it took us 45 days to diagnose it,3 geometrie, now we know what it is,I have been waiting 20 days to get an appointment, drove 400 km to get a diagnostic, wait another 15 days for another appointmnent where the patrt was not delivered (drove another 200 km the shop could not call me) .Indeed the part is not in stock,it is a december 2007 ,lift 2008 xj8 .I am still waiting for jaguar to call me back, and I found the part in the US....it is frustrating to wait for ever,to drive it the minimum having that feeling to break a wheel bearing or something else...they are waiting for Jag uk to let them know if yes or not the part is in stock,it has been a week now.No news. For once I had a warranty,,in 6 months its about to expire....it will take more than a month after diagnosting the problem, and 3 months from the time I realised something was wrong. If this is call a constructor warranty,I rather pay and get the job done in 2 days.
