I have always wanted a Jag so for my 70th birthday last year I treated myself to a 2007 XJ8 VDP. Dark green, tan interior, 43,000 miles, classic, a beauty. Bought it from a dealer who finds the car, checks it out and brings it into town for you.

They didn't check it out well enough, the back end was groaning. Took it back to them three times, still groaning. Then took it to the local Jag dealer. Diff was burned out but don't worry, covered by the extended warranty you bought. Car off the road three weeks, parts from England. Ah, gee, sorry, new diff is different design, old prop shaft won't fit, need new part. Not covered, warranty company walks away, leaves car in bits, not driveable, costs me $2000 to put it back on the road. Litigation.

Took it in to my service station for oil change. Kept overnight. Needs headlight bulb. Who knew? My 1999 SAAB 9-5 tells me when bulb is out, Jag doesn't. We shopped around for you, Sir, and saved you a hundred bucks. Saved on what, exactly? Bulb cost me $249. Get on internet, find two-pack for $94, Philips, made in Germany, ship to son in U.S. Canadians getting hosed again.

This spring, had Jag dealer service the air conditioning. Month later, not as cold as it should be. Take it back in. Ah, compressor is shot. Covered by extended warranty but they have located a used unit, take a week to get here. Right, I'm off on vacation for three weeks, see you when I get back. Took it in Thu morning last week. Thu afternoon, sorry, keeping it overnight, bigger job than we thought. Fri afternoon call, sorry, broken stud, we have to send it out to machine shop. Next Tue morning, sorry, used unit no good, new part ordered from England. Gee, we are driving to see grandchildren in U.S. on 6th, can I have car back on 5th? No chance. We'll take the SAAB, bless it, 500 miles. So right now, car is still off the road for another three weeks. In 16 months I have driven it 5000 miles.

One other complaint - the paint is very soft. You only have to look at it and you get a scratch. No scratches on 13-year-old SAAB.

Why do parts have to come from England? Is there no parts store in North America?

I have had many cars over the years. I have never had to replace a diff or A/C compressor and this one has done only 48,000 miles.

I now realize what a great car the SAAB is. We love it.

Morals of the tale:

There's no fool like an old fool.
Be careful what you wish for.
Vee get too soon old und too late schmart.
Good to read,

I have driven saabs my whole adult life,96/99/couple of 900 turbos a 9000 turbo and the last one a 1999 Nordic tuned 240hp 9-5 3.0t Griffin
Wich i rode until 180.000 miles with no problems at all apart from wear and tear issues...the car is used by my brother in law now and still goes as strong as ever.

I loved jags and wanted one, so i bought a beautiful black x350 XJR.
20" sepangs the whole lot... gorgeous.
I am the second owner the car is always (st)dealer maintained until i got it.

BUT:
Rumble in the driveline, replaced prop shaft but there is still a rumble in the drive line..
Lurching of the gearbox when cold.
Compared to the Saabs harman kardon sound system the top of the line alpine in my jag is just crap.
Paint as mentioned above very very soft.
Both front wheel bearings gone. (120.000 mile car) never replaced a single bearing on the saab.
Amber suspension light is 5 times out 10 on.
Park distance keeps bleeping every now and then, cant find the problem so far.
Corrosion!! there wasn't any and still is none on my 99' steel saab.. the jag is a disgrace in that respect.
New brake discs pads and still there is a vibration while braking softly.
Window trim just clicks loose somehow, it just ff ing falls off while driving!

I love the power, and how it makes you feel on long cross continental trips here in Europe.

But when the family comes over and parks our old saab in front of my house.. regret is a big word but..sometimes its very very close.

And when i see one of these on the highway.... i want it so badly..
So the jag will go soon..

I like most of the features, but the one thing that really distracts me is the bottom of the frame of the touchscreen is reflective and in a combination of sunlight and shadow, really irritating.

Harrumph !! If Saabs are (were !!) so good, how come they went bust because nobody bought the cars.

Anyway, back to the main thread....

I don't like the "unfair wear and tear" of this X350 car, too many parts that clearly would be expected to wear out sometime in the car's life just don't last long enough. Suspension bushes and so on come to mind.

Maybe 'mile108' is right after all, and I should look out for a Saab !!

Now, now, Fraser !!

Be brave . . . shoulders back . . . be a man . . . keep-the-faith . . . and, just replace the suspension bushes !!

This cat its full of pros and cons. Pros: sufficient performance, great ride, not so bad on gas if your easy on the gas, routine maintenance its not expensive, list goes on. Cons: over priced parts, the basic brake setup sucks, the paint its fragile, the car falls apart pretty really compared to other vehicles, too many integrated parts (causing the owner to but entire assemblies, such as a new throttle body for a new tps sensor), the air suspension is not reliable (I converted mine, by the way, completely satisfied with the ride quality and parts from Arnott) the Alpine stereo is low quality, headliner sags at low miles. This list goes on and on too. I do not make enough money to upgrade to a x351 xj, but one day i hope to experience the quality differences.

Fortunately, my entire suspension was replaced right before purchase. As for performance/economy: I took a trip to Atlanta recently. 800 miles, average speed of 75mph and 150 or so miles was in town driving and I managed 24.2mpg. I'm a bit heavy on the gas, obviously and I definitely suggest a newer escort radar with the live smart cord to anyone with the heavy foot disease... the advance alerts on my phone coupled with the detector really saved my rear a few times on that trip.

Default Nine pages of whining! Really?

From 2003 to 2007 Jaguar produced about 28,400. XJ's and I am sure that some of them were serviced for something at least once. Just to contrast,I'm glade I'm not on a Ford F150 forum since in 2005 alone Ford built over 900,000 F150 pickup trucks ( Vs. about 5,000 XJ X350's built) and I'm sure since then some of those pickups went to the repair shop. I am really not interested in a million 2005 F150 stories about dashboard lights and shock absorbers or the equivalent of 285 pages of what I don't like about the 2005 F150.

About 50% of marriages end in the divorce so I know that half of married people don't like something about each other. Are we all interesting in reading about it?

It's much more enjoyable reading about solutions and helping each other than listening to whining.

If owning an out of production-out of warranty Jaguar makes you want to whine about it, my solution is get a divorce. Move on to a 2005 F150 and have 30 times the fun listening to whining.

Could we end this monotonous thread please?

Ps. How do you like my whining about whining? A Saab is the worlds greatest car ever? What? The most quirky ugly cars ever produced next to a Volvo that's now history because they couldn't produce and sell them? Who ever heard?," Nice Saab." My apologies to all Nordic peoples. The ladies I've seen are so exceptionally beautiful, but the cars not so much. Sorry again.

Hmmm. Maybe a course on diplomacy for our last two posters. Even a couple of hours on the naughty step. I don't think posts like this do us enthusiasts any favours. What do others think ?

These threads are perfectly acceptable, staying on topic is more important. If you can't contribute to the content in a constructive manner, please don't post anything at all. Personally, I think this thread is harmless.

I agree...

But i dont have any other car brands as reference because the only cars i ever owned where either Saabs and a 911 993 4s.

So let me rephrase, compared to my previous cars, and especially if you look at the price tag when new.

Imho the X350 is just not up to the standard i would expect from a 148.000 euro car when new.

I don't think it has been mentioned, but the driver's seat could go back more. It is not like rear passengers need more room (at least in an XJ8L, VDP or Super V8).

Even with it all the way back and power pedals all the way forward, I could use another inch. I think this is mainly because I have the seat height up (when down the seat actually moves back too).

dang evil, how stinking stretched are you? lol When the seat is set to 'auto' and goes all the way back when removing the key, the motor feels like it runs for 10 seconds (I know I'm exaggerating a bit) I feel like I'm coming out of a big bean bag when its at its full-back position.

I dont think I am stretched out at all actually. I put the seat all the way back, but not all the way down. In fact, i have it most of the way up to the point that my head almost touches the headliner. I find this gives the best vision with the long hood and the side mirros which in my experience tend to block vision because the doors are so high. The backrest is fairly vertical. When in auto (which I hate) the seat goes down quite a bit. If I put the seat down more it goes back to a point where you could drive it if you were pretty tall. I am tall, but not excessively so and, as a result, I like to keep the seat up more to keep my head as high as possible.

As a point of comparison, I have the same issue in my old range rover (which is worse in that I have to have the seat all the way back AND down), my lotus (all the way back i barely fit) and my defenders (I should install the longer seat rails) but my tdi VW and the Honda I had way back when, I still had several inches I could move the seat back. Apparently no one in Britian is over 6' tall or if they are they drive with their knees bent a fair bit more than I would consider comfortable.

Hate the quality. Latest problems with my '04 XJ8: Cloth needs replacing on "B" pillar and no heat driver's side dash vent. Can't figure out either

acbsfb, so engine's good, tranny's good, electronics are good, just have a problem with the glue under some headliner material and sounds like the DCCV valve is stuck. I'd argue that your statement implying low quality is a little exaggerated for an 8-yr old car...unless you have a laundry list of others worth mentioning.

To keep this on-topic, I have learned that I don't like not being able to turn off the adaptive cruise like the DSC, or SPORT mode. Related to that function, nor do I like having to hit RESET to revert to my previous trip information every time I set it or when the car brakes for me and gives me that gap message. (I like to watch instant MPG when I drive)

Many little nagging problems: cloudy head lamps, hood ornament falling off, trunk pull down, elec. parking break, etc, etc. Most have been resolved but I'm not sure what to do about the pillar as I don't want to force it without knowing what I'm doing. Whats a DCCV valve?

DCCV = Dual Climate Control Valve, they are a known issue.

As far as I remember, Arden sells longer seat rails, of course for a horrible price. It shouldn't be such a challenge to have them made in a good workshop. I'm 6'4'', and with the seat all the way back and down it's just right. For the cupholder, you can just take it out and maybe replace with something else. It's an european car, and it seems Europeans like the size of it. Other issues are rather a feature than a bug: no, you can not change gears manually, influence the suspension nor have folding seats, since this is not about driving a Jag.
