Default What year for VVT?

Does anybody know what year the XJR went to variable valve timing? I know it adds 10 horsepower. I'm guessing I can't remember. Thanks!

Yes, it was introduced with MY2006.

Best regards,

Thomas, do you know how much horsepower that added? I believe the original 4.2 is 385 but everybody always called it. 400, which it technically isn't

Hi Viper1996,
Here's a clip from the 2008 brochure

2008 performance figures
I think earlier s/c engines without VVT were 390 bhp, so VVT added about 10 bhp. I think that the main benefit of VVT is that when cruising at about 1700 rpm the engine is has cam timing that aids economy. I usually get around 9.7 - 9.9 Km per liter on an easy trip. That's around 27 - 28 miles per imperial gallon (22 - 23 miles per US gallon).

In Germany, the SC cars without VVT are rated as
291KW -> 396 HP (or, 395 HP, depending on the rounding of the figure :-) )
and
541 NM of torque.

Unfortunately, I do not have the data of the SC cars with VVT.

There are no power gains except added weaknes with these "ecologycal" shafts. Both version are 395hp officialy. Due to oil starvation with not regular usage it starts to crackle loudly on cold startup. If you can just avoid 4.2SC 2006MY+. There is no fix for this just a matter of time when to repair it and wait for next one..

Interesting. I have been looking for a supercharged XJ and was purposely looking for an 06+ due to the other updates X356 cars received. Guess I'll narrow my search to 04-05 models. Thanks for the info.

I did go and drive an 06 XJR today and it was nice and quiet from a cold start, but had lower mileage. Unfortunately the car was a bit of a wreck so I passed.

Yes. That thing is an absolute disaster. I figured it would be, but only a 15 minute drive from my house so figured I'd waste an hour of my time.

Oh I'm so sorry you wasted so much time, that's just awful. That thing is a disaster, I just felt bad for it honestly. I think its worth $5k tops, needs a lot of work to get right. If you ever need to see a car in this area again just let me know and I'll be happy to go give it a look. I've done the same though. In my younger days (before kids) I would spend weekends going to see cars and 90% of the time come home disappointed. Usually worked out in the end when I found the right one, but there's so much junk out there and owners who are just dishonest when selling. I've owned 40 or so cars in my lifetime and I never once had a buyer walk away. I always undersell the car so the buyer knows exactly what they're getting if not more.

Please send me details on that XJR, I'll go buy it today! Feel free to PM me or even give me a call if you want, would be interested to hear about it.

if you get an 06 you don’t have to deal with the basically untunable SH ecm

sure it is always about pros and cons. pre-06s have brakes but have problems with TPS..etc. All ECUs can be reflashed but not as easy as 06-, agree. All offers should be analysed in conjunction with purpose of purchase, price, way of usage and maintenance and repair capabilities in your area. I would not go to bottom of the market with these cars if not only expirienced wheeler dealer. In my opinion 06-07 also looks cleaner with shaved doors and glasses. I recently made full 358 conversion of my 03 and had to get used to bulky bumpers look for the first time..but now i like the new look more when it was half350-half356
