Default What is your maintenance/repair cost per mile?

I am trying to evaluate my commuting options, but I am having trouble predicting what the expected maintenance/repair costs for my X350 are. Right now, I am assuming about $0.25/mile, meaning if I drive 1000 miles a month, I would spend $250 on maintenance and repairs, on average.

For those of you who keep detailed maintenance/repair records, what has your maintenance/repair cost per mile been?

04 XJ8. Owned since 8/09. Purchased with 32,000, now have 47,000. Spent about $2500 to date. Biggest cost was Michelin Pilot Sport AS's for $1,000. The remainder included replacing a weepy coolant expansion tank, a new thermostat and heater core flush, rear brakes, and misc. fluid changes. So far about $.166 per mile.

Bought with 26,000, now have 60,000. Installed: $45 idler pulley, $120 coolant header tank, $800 2 front air springs, $400 air compressor, $150 front door latch, $400 four Pirelli P6, $150 paintless dent repair, $80 headlight bulbs, $300 4 oil changes, $135 battery, $100 horn switch, $25 air filter, $25 fuel filter, $25 coolant change, $220 front rotors and pads, $50 wax, $25 leather creme. This is about $0.09 per mile. If labor is added to the parts prices, this would roughly double the number to $0.18 per mile.

Interesting that these numbers are kind of all over the place! Sounds like you guys are saving a lot of money by doing work yourselves!

How did you get 4 Pirelli P6s for $400!??!

Right now I'm at about $0.15/mile. If I blew an airspring ($800 repair) then my cost would go way up to almost $0.30/mile, which isn't too terrible, especially given that this probably won't happen (knock on burl walnut!) just yet.

I am starting to think that maybe I just don't need to worry about it. I was thinking of leasing a Honda Insight Hybrid for about $230/month and that it would save me about $100/month on my commute. This was based on the $0.25/mile maintenance figure, though!

Pirelli P6 were on sale for $75 each at tire rack at the time, shipping was $32 and mounting and balancing was $15 each. Anybody that does things like go to a tire store to buy tires would rather spend on tires than take a cruise!
Doing ones own work saves big. I saved approx $3000 doing the air suspension work alone. It took about 2 1/2 hours for the whole thing. By doing this, you not only save money but have the satisfaction and security of taking care of things yourself. I can generally do better work than the dealership so I don;t worry about things like arguing who put the dent in the trunk lid while it was there. One day I was at the Audi dealer for some warranty work and they lowered the overhead door on my hood while I stood right there! I just try to stay home!

One thing that is really annoying me now is that my front bumper has cracked paint that is chipping (must've been resprayed at some point). It's probably going to cost me $400+ to have it redone properly.

Bought my Current Jag with 58K now has 60500. so over 2500 miles I have racked up:

(all done myself)
ZF Transmission service $390
Mobil1 Oil Change $50
New Air Filters $60
New Windshield Wipers $20
New Light Bulbs $30

So $550 over 2500 miles is what $4.54 a mile LOL.

Haha, startup costs for any used car are ALWAYS high, especially for nitpicky people like me. That's why I posted this because I have no idea how it's going to be down the road!

Actually I have a lot of backlogged items that I want to do (cracked/chipped front bumper, sagging headliner, needs new tires because of flatspotting, etc.)
