Default What's everyone running for tires nowadays?

The tires on my 06 xj8 are finally in need of renewal. I have the stock Contis and at 45k miles they are worn out.
Just wondered what everybody was running nowadays and how happy are you with them.
My first concern is noise. I love the quiet ride this car has and don't want to lose that.
Also where did you get them. Tirerack has been where I have bought tires for my other vehicles and I have been pleased with them so far.
Anyway thanks in advance for any feedback
Chad

Hey Chad,

Not a big fan of the Contis here. I just re-shoed my 04 XJ with Pirelli PZero Nero All Season ZR18s that Tire Rack was running a special on for around $600.

Must say I am IN LOVE with these tires. Frighteningly quiet, handle great in wet and dry conditions and are a bargain at the price.

If your XJ has 18's, this is the route to go, IMO.

The previous owner put new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus...noisy as crap! Avoid 'em. I'm going to go with Sumitomo HTR Z III on my next set either on my XJ or my XK8, both have 19" wheels and I buy performance all season tires.

General GMAX AS03's . Installed them 5K ago . They are better than stock Michelins in every way!! Excellent wet raction which was always the weakness of the MXMH4's.

Ride is smooth but turn in is still crisp. A little noise but that the price of higher levels of traction!!

I just mounted Hankook I CEPT EVO W310 winter tires. The Daimler is running very smooth with them.

My previous car, a BMW 523i, had Hankook summer tires and I was very satisfied with them. So with this good experience in mind I decided to give their Winter tires a chance. Size is 225x60 R16

Default thanks for the replys

I'll probably pull the trigger on this in a week or two (xj8's not a daily driver so no hurry)
I'll post the outcome once I do.
Just food for thought, many of the reviews on several tires comment about the noise increase as the tire wears. I'm thinking it may not be wear that increases/changes the noise characteristics but the aging of the rubber compound. Some compound blends get hard as they age which would result in an increase in the noise level.
just wondering.

Default went with Pirelli nero zeros from tire rack.

Have 100 miles on them and they are quiet.
We'll see if they stay that way.
Thanks for the replies

Interesting about the noise mentioned above in the Michelin pilot sport a/s...I have had a couple sets, and they are silent, handle well, but wear out in 10k miles (of course my driving has a lot to do with it).

I currently have Good Year Eagle F1's, and they sound like off road knobies. They really suck!

I despise Continental. I have run 4 sets on various vehicles over the years, and have had problems with cupping, premature wear, and most frightening...I have had 6 tires delaminate on me. I wouldn't put Conti's on my tractor!

I also like pirelli's, but not usually willing to pay the high price.

I have conti's on mine and up till now have been thrilled with them. Mind you I don't use the car as much as some of fellows do so I guess I will find out over time. Will just take a little longer for me.

Hankook V24 Evo's in the summer. They are hard as a rock in the winter and feel like you are riding on solid tires.
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S in the winter. Way better in the rain and slush if I get caught out.
I use my Range Rover in the snow.
Those 10inch rears on the XKR don't give a lot of traction in snow and why tempt fate when I have a great alternative. {if you get snow that is}

I have Cooper Zeon RS3-A's, recommended by a tire tech last November. Excellent traction, low noise, but a little on the hard side for me.

Hey give a guy a break. I could not connect for about four of those months. Don't know what was wrong, just cured itself when I purchased a new computer.

Be careful with the ZIIIs, they are summer only and they really mean it, these tires get slick in temps below 45 deg F. and don't even think about any snow or ice. They seem fine in the wet but only in summer temps. What they are good for is high performance driving in warm weather.

How old are they/mileage and what don't you like about them. The local 'Jag' Mechanic I use recommended Hankook or Falken, but I found the Eagle F1 on my own and was just about to drop $900 on them... I NEED tires THIS WEEK and (personally) I need a solid recommendation. I don't mind dropping another $5-600 in total to get tires I will be happy with. I am in West Central Florida and we get Heat, Rain and temps down to ~45 average (No Snow, and I don't plan to be anywhere where there will be with the jag) so i need good summer tires rather than true all-season one.

Thanks for your thoughts,
Peter
