Default Wheel and Tire Help

On Monday, I was on the highway and rolled over a transmission that dropped off a truck in front of me. I couldnt swerve do to a car being next to me and had to hit it. The impact broke the 19" "performance" wheels I had (the 10 spoke ones) OEM wheels that came with the 2004 Jaguar XJR.

I was in a rush to get the car running again and the guys at the repair shop were pretty helpful. Because its a 2004 model, the Brembo breaks on it are apparently bigger then the breaks of later models, so only certain rims could fit. Out of my options I chose the TSW Silverstone wheels.

Heres the issue: I told the Tire Rack guy I needed 19X9, 19X8.5 at a minimum to mount 19 255R40's. He ordered 19X8's. He INSISTS that they will mount 255's. We got into an argument... not quite angry but I'd say heated. He pretty much defended that this is what he does for a living. Michelin says their tire needs a 8.5-10 wide rim... I may not be an expert but I can read. (replacement tires are Pilot Sport AS 3) http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes

The guy at the repair shop shares my concern but says hes worked with this guy for years and so he will try mounting them. Heres the thing... 19 255 45's say they will fit 8"-10". I think the tire rack guy got confused, as mine are 19 255 40's... not 45.

I googled my questions and people said they have mounted 255 tires on 8" wide rims with no problem. One guy said he mounted 275's Others posted saying just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Usual forum arguments started with no winner.

Anyway, once tires are mounted, you cant send back rims. Should I let them go ahead and do this (jags my only car, I need it back asap) or tell them to send the rims back and get 8.5+, thus having to wait 3+ more days?

Tread patch really shouldn't be more than wheel width. Just sayin'

I needed tyres quickly after I bought an XJ6 2003, got a set of Falken Azenis 235x 18 X 2 and 255x18 X2 as they were going cheap. Fitted them to my 8 inch rims and done 2000mls with no problems?

Well, just wanted to reply with the result, in case anyone else needs to replace rims in the future and looks this thread up. the 19X8 TSW Silverstones mounted the 255 tires without issues. I looked it up and they actually call for 255 tires on the 19X8's and nothing else... 255 were the only tires listed as far as I saw. I put them side to side with my old rims and they are about as wide. I can only guess TSW measures by where the tire inserts, rather then the full width of the rim.
