I pulled codes on my car due to restricted performance on dash. one code says "misfire on cylinder G. where can I find a diagram for the motor that shows cylinder assignment, so I can change out that coil?
Are you sure it wasn't cylinder 6?
never heard of cylinders being id by letter?
Cylinders for our models are by bank and cylinder so:
Standing in front of car:-
Bank1 on left side has from front (AUX BELT END) cyl 1, 3, 5, 7
Bank 2 on right has cyl 2, 4, 6 and 8
I think joesoap is probably correct and your scanner is referencing cylinder 6, but it could also be using the ISO numbering scheme where cylinder 1 is A and so forth, which would make cylinder G the same as cylinder 7.
Your 2000 XJ8L is a Jaguar factory project code X308, and you've posted your question in the forum for the X350, which is the project code for the 2003-2009 XJ saloons. Here's the cylinder diagram from the Jaguar Vehicle Specifications Guide dated 2003:
As you can see, prior to the 2002.5 models, Jaguar numbered the cylinders 1-4 for each bank, but after that they went to the 1-8 numbering scheme. My guess is that your OBDII scanner uses the later terminology, so your cylinder 6 should be the third one from the front in the right bank when facing the front of the engine, and your cylinder G would be the rear cylinder in the left bank when facing the front of the engine.
Try swapping the coils for cylinders 6 and 2 and 7 and 1 and see if the misfire moves to cylinder 1 or 2. If so, you've found your culprit.
BTW, I'm assuming the fault code you read was P0306 or P0307, which will tell you exactly which cylinder your misfire was in according to the 1-8 cylinder chart.
You can find the definitions for all of the Diagnostic Trouble Codes in the X308 DTC Summaries manual, which you can download here:
