Mine, of 2004, is practically a baby (44.500 kms) and I intend to run it for years/decades, my first and probably my last real saloon cruiser, hoping to achieve those sometimes impressive mileages I see here, through diligent driving and care. I know from this forum (thx again to the community!) what are the most common issues and I will have to fix them when they arise to enjoy what this marvellous car offers.

1999 XJR with 146,500 miles. I have owned it for six days and have already put 300 miles on it. After some minor tinkering (with the help of the fine people of this forum), it has gone from a strong running car to an unbelievable machine. I know I have a long road ahead with this car, but having only paid $4500 for it, I am comfortable putting more money into it. Used Jaguars are a bargain, when you stop to think about it. What other car that cost $70,000 new can be had for less than $10,000 a decade later? A Corvette of the same vintage will cost you 2-3 times what a nice XJR would. A Porsche 911 of the same vintage will cost even more than that. I would have no problem putting $10,000 into my XJR over the years, if I needed to. As of right now, it is an incredible daily driver. I have a 60 mile round trip to work every day, and I couldn't think of a better car to make the drive in. My driving is all rural, and I am averaging 22 MPG with this car. If I show some restraint with my right foot, which admittedly is extremely difficult, I can top 25 MPG.

I love my Jag! If it wasn't for my wife (and those darn marriage laws), I would marry it...

Hi mclrky69
Sorry to hear about your gear box failing. I fear that all is not well with mine. Can I ask:
1) can you describe the build up to the failure - when did the first symptoms occur and did they change as time went on?
2) what was the cost of the new box?
thanks.
Mike

Build up to the failure was quite sudden. It started with juddering and slipping on acceleration. This quickly progressed to classic A drum failure symptoms, put car into drive, nothing until over 1500rpm then THUD.

I'm around $1000 into a good used box. I plan to rebuild the old box once it is out with a rebuild kit...

Also, CarQuest has the filter kit for these boxes on for $37 right now!

Great thread!

2004 XJ8 bought new. We now have 110k miles on it and I'm very encouraged from this thread about keeping it to 200,000 miles.

Issues:
1. Warranty repair on oil supply problem to variable valve timing apparatus
2. Idler pulley replaced due to squeak; serpentine belt replaced; warranty
3. New heater control assembly in dash ~ air volume and temp not even from R to L side. This was $2600 total. Dealer had to remove entire assembly and install new one. This was not under warranty.
4. New brakes, of course.
5. New speaker driver side on dash

That's it. Suspension, tranny and everything else going great and uses an insignificant amount of engine oil.

Default 2nd Owner

I bought my 2000 VDP in 2010 with 140k, now I'm at around 186k.

It had all the timing chain repair work done prior to my ownership, but since then I've only had to replace the thermostat (kind of a pain to get to, my mechanic friend said) and the usual fuses/bulbs/fluids.

150K miles should be just run in if well looked after. If a guy can get 3 million miles out of an 1800cc Volvo you should be able to get at least 200k without significant issues. Most modern cars should easily do 500k with only general wear and tear items being changed.

My 04 XJ8 has 150K miles on the clock.

It runs well with the odd engine hiccup every now and again.
Spurious little issues like leaky driver foot well, once after using a automated washing machine, won't be doing that again.

One rear window won't work properly sometimes from the drivers door console. I have stripped, cleaned and put back together ( an easy job to be honest), but still the same. I have even carried out the reset but no joy.

Interior is still nice and clean ( except a little sagging of roof liner on the rear pillars. Sunroof cover is hanging loose too.

However, I got the car for a song, am happy to put a couple of thou$ into it to keep it all mechanically sound and would expect it to pass the 250K+ miles no problem.

My 2005 VDP has 119K (miles) on it. Original engine and transmission. That is 190k (KM) converted to MI as I am in Canada and the odo is in KM).

Is that the main ECU reflashing? Surely thats a Dealer job and will cost $$$. I rarely have rear passengers so it can stay like it for now.

I had a XJS with 168000 when I sold it . I now have a 2004 XJR with 133000 on it. Replaced transmission fluid and cover/filter at 100000, also changed oil in supercharger while having hoses replaced. Leaky heater hose. Just bought pads and rotors for all wheels to replace this weekend.

My 2005 XJ8 is coming up on 138k soon, and only just required some aging replacements/repairs within the last 6 months. Nothing major though and still running well. I once had a 1991 XJ40 with over 200k, and it ran on the freeways like a champ.

My 2003 X350 ( we had them a year earlier over here ) now has over 200000 miles, it had about 52000 miles when I got it 7 1/2 years ago. It does few miles now as the newer XJ does about 10000 a year which leaves the X350 doing around 15000 or so. Still runs really well.

My wife uses her 99 as a daily driver. She just passed 237K. Had to do the usual repairs, timing chains front end (parts still on the work bench, LOL) But still a strong runner. I maxed the car out on a runway 2 years ago at 135 MPH, do not know if she had more to give as I was responding to an accident as a first responder.

Default jaguar xj8 1998

Well my jaguar has 143k miles not to mention I've had to get new coils, alternator and changed the upper struts as well did it all myself because of this website car runs like a champ with no check engine light either.
