When my kids were in their teens and needing first cars I offered them Jaguars. Cheap to buy, I know how to fix 'em, rock solid in the event of a crash...I saw nothing but advantages.

My kids felt Jaguars were absolutley and exclusively for old people...."you know, like you, Dad". They wanted Hondas. I caved. <sigh> So much for my parental influence, eh?

Not that there's anything wrong with Hondas, mind you. Perfectly good little cars. It's just that, in my mind, they'll never be anything except "a perfectly good little car" :-) :-)

Hello, i'm also not 80 .. I'm driving Jaguars since I was 24. Hell, it costed a fortune to drive (and maintain) the series 2 but what a fun it was. Jaguars (especially the series 1 and 2) are real head-turners. What's important to you to drive, when you are that young. Then you don't want a dull car.

I bought my first Series III XJ6 when I was 20 years old. Im now 25 and just bought my 2nd X350. XJs are not for old people, they are for people of a different breed who have a good head on their shoulders. Why do you think the XJ is the least ticketed car in America 2 years in a row?

 

I got my first speeding ticket ever in my 04 XJ8!! (75 in a 45! Yikes!!)

I think you hit the nail on the head - age for some people is just a number, I hit 72 this year, have an X350 but also three motorcycles, one of which I rode to the arctic circle last year.

 

That's only pretending to live, unless you did it in January without the benefits of a chinook. Okay maybe that isn't living, maybe that's just stupid, but it would be something to brag about.

 

Wasn't bragging, just pointing out that just because you're gray haired it doesn't mean your "old".

 

Oh I understand that, I was just saying doing it in January would be something to brag about.

 

Most every Camry I see is driven by a 50+ female.
Most Corollas, Civics, Focuses are driven by 25 and under and finally most Ford Crown Vic are either driven by police or 60+ males.

 

50+ and 80+ are different things!

 

It is a bit weird but 70% of the Jags I see in New Zealand are driven by 50+ females.

 

I'm 35 and my wife rolls her eyes at me each time I get out of the car with a smile on my face. When I bought the car she must have laughed for two days that I got an "old man sedan." My buddies call me grandpa for driving it; they drive Nissans, Acuras, and Volvos... they might as well just get neutered. I let my father-in-law drive it (age 67). He took it to his friends house and the two of them were drooling over the car. Then he took it for a 100 mph sprint on the PA turnpike; he is now a believer. So I completely agree that it has the stigma of an older man's cruiser, until they go for a ride.

 

Some of us old farts were a lot younger than you young wippersnappers when we first got into Jags. (1974) Sob, Sob. It's been a hell of a party and a hell of a ride but we got er done and showed you how. Show a little respect.

 

It is a definate stereotype, but my xj hauls and sounds beastly too. I do have the standard 17" wheels giving it a boring look but after winter I want to pick up a set of Jag 5 spokes to freshen up the look.

Along with some light window tint. I have very dark tint on the honda but none on the Jag as my father mainly drives it, afterall I did buy it for his 50th birthday.

 

perhaps the reason why you see the more expensive Jags driven by more mature people is that percentage wise younger people haven't had time to acquire the means by which to pay for what is probably their dream car. The response I get from all the "kids" that see my XJL supercharged Neiman Marcus edition is , "wow" and "wish I could afford one of those" and "Dam...,that baby is sweet" and so on. The best comment was from a 30ish guy who said if I had one of those I might not need my compliment of "babe" catcher stuff. LOL

 

Well, today I was driving around in Arlington, VA, when a GORGEOUS black X350 weaved its way around me in traffic. I noticed that the driver was under 50 (what a relief). The car was so gorgeous I couldn't take my eyes off it. Even though it is not the latest generation anymore, it still looks very fresh and very classic to my eyes.

It was a regular XJ8 (not L or R or VDP). I had my heart set for a VDP or at least an L, but I think after seeing that beauty I could settle for a SWB XJ8 with navigation, as long as it was black on black.
