Place your fingers underneath the lamp and pull upwards, placing tension on the spring that is on top of the lamp, while rotating the bottom outwards to clear the two small V shaped notches that keep it positioned. To install you place the bottom of the lamp in first to set the V notches and push the top until the retention spring goes into the bumper assembly.
In this picture the lamp is upside down after removal. Please note the V notches.

Hi Phil,
I like David's removal instructions better than mine so try his method. The only potential hitch is if the ends of the spring clips have slipped behind the bumper cover and are hung up, which may require a more wiggling and manipulation to get the lamp free. If the spring clips bend during the process they can be reshaped before you reinstall the lamp.

My 2006 XJR was suffering the same side marker disease with the right rear side marker light cracking and allowing water to corrode the bulb socket. As you can see in the attached photos, the corrosion in the bulb socket allowed water to seep into the black female connector for the wiring harness and the connector broke off one of the blades from the bulb socket.
One of the other threads on this subject mentioned that the bulb socket on some Volvo and VW cars is identical.
I went to the local Pull-A-Part Salvage yard today. They had a 1995 VW Golf Cabriolet, and sure enough, the bulb socket for the front side marker light is identical, although using black plastic instead of the beige that came with the Jag side marker light.
I removed the female connector from the wiring harness after cutting the wires to leave a four inch pig tale. In looking around still further, I found that the VW had the same connector for the under hood light switch and also for the windshield washer pump.
I also found a 1993 Coupe Golf with the same connectors. I removed all four from both cars and took the bulb sockets from the right front side marker and left front side marker lights for spares.
Eight female sockets and four bulb sockets cost $10.71 total.
I looked at some of the other female wiring sockets, however, you have to use connectors with provision for two alignment bars. Blue plastic has a single off center bar and fuel injection harness connectors have a single center alignment bar.
