Do you believe the X350 or X358 will ever be collectable as the last of classically designed Jaguar saloons?

 

XJR (not x358)....may become a minor classic

 

I would love to find a well taken care of x358 xjr or SV8. I would buy it in a heartbeat. But sadly they are just too rare

 

Not sure "abundant" and electronics-filled cars will become collectors.
Rare models like the 2006 Portfolio SV8, the Daimler Super Eight may do it.

 

What will have to happen, and likely only after they are old enough to be no longer emissions tested, (25 years old here), there will need to be an electronic band aid to take control of all the systems and remove the voodoo can-bus as the final authority. There is precedent, the Holly computer systems used on racers and high performance street cars does just that, but only for the engine controls and some transmissions. We will need something a bit more comprehensive, to include climate, steering and other 'car body' functions. The biggest hold back is that true computer nerds, aren't usually car guys.

 

Why is everyone on this forum concerned with the electronics? There will always be plenty of "used" fully functioning electronic ECMs that can just slot in. Or am I missing something? I am honestly more concerned with rare and hard-to-find mechanical components in the powertrain or suspension.

 

The X350 / X358 is as much as anything a collection of modules rolling down the road. Having any control over the module swarm is a fairly valid concern IMO. Once 3d printing, and more importantly 3d scanning get legs, the hard to find mechanical parts should be a thing of the past.

 

I believe these cars are completely flying under the radar at the moment. We can see price trends going back to the muscle car era where cool cars end up depreciating and bottoming out around the 10-12 year mark. At the 15 year mark we start to see a upward trend, this seems the average for recent history.

On the other side we have seen a completely upside down world the last two years with new/used car values going through the roof. Cost of capital was never lower and toy expenditures exploded. This is changing for the worse right now and electric cars will be the norm 10-15 years from now. Question becomes will all unique cars continue to climb in value or just those special versions? Will someone consider an "old" x350 for the same price as a 3 year old Toyota Corolla? People might realize at some point, new cars are designed to be disposable, where as these old land yachts were built with quality in mind.

Anyone that gets an opportunity to drive one of these, throws their ancient image of Jaguar out the window. These were built to a very high standard (besides the sagging headliners )
-All aluminum (even the suspension arms, not a lot of nonsense stamped steel) = lightweight even for how large they are.
-Jag v8
-ZF trans
-Ford differential
-Bilstein shocks (Fantastic system when new, just expensive and now hard to find replacements)

The X350 and X358 are beautifull cars, both in exterior design and all the woodwork and leather inside. Obviously the V8's will allways attract the premium $$$ (as the 3.8 mk2's) but the lesser 3 litre V6's will still be attractive (maybe more so due to less probematic issues with the motor.) I know I payed over the top for my car and probably never get back what I payed for it but I bought it for thr experiance and not for investment.

 

Let’s hope not; these cars are probably the best value most and durable reliable luxury cars ever made.
Unfortunately in Britain at least, dealers are already asking mad prices for XJR s, especially the X358.

Digging back further through my lists, X358's bring a slight premium however the sample size of these cars selling is too low to show any meaningful differences between x350, x356, x358.

 

The price spread is very wide here too; offers today range from £5,000 for a 148,000 mile 2003 Super V8, to £21,500 for a 27,000 mile 2007 XJR Portfolio. The very few (only 98 home market cars sold new) X358s tend to have higher asking prices regardless of mileage.

What any of these cars actually sell for here is anybody's guess; one sees the same vehicles for sale month after month.

When I bought mine five years ago, I looked at cars priced from £4,000 upwards, buying what I considered the best available condition / history / specification for £7,000. I had no particular preference between X350 and X358 beyond wanting a 2006 onwards car with VVT and the other improvements from that year.

 

And you hit the jackpot in terms of specs. Congrats

 

If you're reading this thread with an eye toward actually buying one of these beautiful old Jags, here are my learnings:

- Find a late model example (from mid 2006 - on in USA). These cars have many, many subtle but important improvements over earlier models

- These later cars came as X356 ('06 and '07 USA) and X358 ('08 and '09? USA). The X356 looks like earlier cars; the X358 is "facelifted" (sic)

- The most expensive Jag you can buy is a cheap one. Buy the nicest example you can find (these cars are actually pretty durable and reliable, but a rough one will wear you plumb out)

- Buy it to drive it. These are really excellent daily drivers; gorgeous and acceptably modern. (Most "collector cars" are miserable daily drivers, in my hard won experience)

- The "SC Specials" are truly special. Garden variety X356/X358 are fine, but I'm betting that the supercharged cars will eventually be the ones to have. Plus, they're an absolute hoot on the highway

- Plan to spend ~$5K to refesh suspension bushes, shocks, etc, regardless of mileage. And, either DIY or find a good indie

Good advice . It's reliable, but not a Camry.
Throw in tires, brakes , hoses and It might be tough get all those items refreshed for $5k.

This will be an interesting test of the market. Only downside, I don't think the exterior color is for everyone, otherwise this car looks mint.

 

I will be watching it for sure. I wish it had a tan interior. Exterior color is fine.
