I have noticed several post where the incandescent W5W parking bulbs have been replaced with LED's. Are CANBUS LED's required or will a normal LED suffice? I don't want to pull one out to see if it brings a message, put it back, order LED's then pull them again.

 

I replaced mine with Philips LED's and they work flawlessly. They have a nice white light that matches the HID's well. I tried the same bulbs on my Merc's and they flashed. The Philip's work with Jags but not with MB. Got them on Amazon and they also have them at several autoparts shops like Pep Boys, Auto Zone, etc.

Dr John, Installed the Phillips Led on the passenger side, not too bad to do, look's great. Went to the drivers side, got the socket loose, no problem but would not come all the way out. Found a third wire that is very tight and not allowing the socket to be removed. Did you experience this and if so, what is the secret to getting more slack in that third wire and does anyone know where it goes, to the passenger side maybe!

 

I didn't have any trouble with wires being too short but did have a lot of trouble with the tube that holds the bulb in place. I found it very difficult to get it to go in again. It's a tight and awkward position and must be done blind.

Were you able to get them in and working? I've had them in for about 6 months and haven't seen any problems to date.

 

Thanks for the response. I did have a little trouble with the tube on the passenger side but it is in and all is working. I will tackle the drivers side again tomorrow, have to figure out where that wire goes. I do have a K-40 system, I'll see if the wire runs to the front detector unit......Thanks again

Can I replace the side markers with the same LED's? The stock bulbs have a tendency to heat up the housing, and melt a hole in it allowing water in, and ruining the whole unit.
I just replaced both left side markers due to this design, and would like them to last awhile.

That's a great idea, Mark, but the W5W LED bulbs I used were too long to fit in the sidemarker lamps. They looked something like the ones in the photo below, so you'd have to find some that were not as long:





On the topic of parking lamps, I tried a few different types of LEDs and the closest match I could find to the HID headlamps were LED bulbs with a stated color temperature of 5000K. The stock HID headlamp color temp is 4100K, and 6000K LEDs were too blue in comparison.

Mark, don't mess around with those China LED's, spend the $12 on Amazon and just get the Phillips T10 bulb's and you should be fine. Finally got the drivers side installed this morning, the tight wire turns out was wrapped around a plastic protrusion inside the black plastic housing. Using a box cutter I cut a 1 1/2" x 2" opening in the top of the black plastic housing and right there I could see the wire looped over a plastic peg, loosened it and the tube assembly slid right out. There was a nick in the insulation, cut and soldered that and added heat shrink. Siliconed the plastic piece I cut out back in place all is working and look's much better, see picture. Cars a little dirty, had some rain here.

 

I agree with Richxk8. The tried and true Philips T10 (W5W) are from a reputable company, work well without blinking or throwing codes, and are reasonably priced. Don't cheap out. It's not worth the hassle.





We had about a foot of snow and lots of salt on the roads so don't mind the salt spots all over everything.

BTW. Off topic here but anyone living with snow that uses their windscreen washers a lot should look into the Bosch wiper replacements from another thread.

I don't mean to high jack the thread, but will the 194 led fit in the side marker?
If so, I cant decide vision $11.00 pr, or xtreme vision $19.00 pr.
Vision is 6000k, xtreme is 4000k and 360 degree.

Philips marks their bulbs as 194 T10 so they should fit. I don't think temp color is as important with the side marker lights with colored lenses. Again, I'd go with the name brand.

Since we are getting off topic, my HID lights are are getting old and in need of replacement. If anyone is knowledgeable about them, can I get some suggestions about which to get? I was on HIDConcept.com and they have 9 different D1S bulbs. I know I don't want 6000K because of the blue tint. Stock are probably around 4300-4800k range. Philips has 2 in the 4800k range and Osram has one. Has anyone investigated or used them? And I saw something on this forum about the lenses pitting and requiring replacement too.

 

The OE burners are Osram Xenarc D1S and the stock color temp is 4100K. They're widely available, but counterfeits are known, so I would recommend buying them from a seller you trust. There's a YouTube video that shows how to tell the counterfeits from the genuine articles.
