Xj8 engine stall whist on motorway at 70mph
Hi I have a issue with my 98 XJ V8 sport I can drive around town all day with no issue but once I get up to 60, 70, 80 mph cruising speed and ease off the throttle, sometimes the engine will stall comes up on the dash engine stalled and I have to put the car in neutral and restart whilst rolling or completely stop and restart. Once restarted I get a plume of smoke out the back end and then she is off and running again. It has stumped me I took the car to r.n Upton jag specialist in water orton they put it on a diagnostic machine and guess what no faults. They changed the crank sensor and a few pipes at a cost ! But still no joy as I got 3 mile down the road at 60 mph it cut out again ? They are clueless as to what is going on but still have the car at the moment.
Can anyone help please?
Regards
John

It is a common fault on the X308's and sounds like a throttle body issue. It used to happen on my '98 XJR and there was eventually a recall issued for it. It is very scary because it always seemed to happen on a motorway, in the outside lane, after taking my foot off the accelerator.
It would be worth checking to see if yours had it done but it sounds like the same issue (see attached).
You can probably get more info in the XJ ( X308 ) XJ8 / XJR (1997 - 2003) forum.

Xj stalling
Hi thanks for the info I will look into it.
My jag is also showing no faults at all on a diagnostic machine so most jag garages and so called jag specialists are stumped and just clutch at straws telling you it could be a multitude of issues with pound signs flashing in there eyes !
It's cost me £300 already and the jag specialist that has my car has not got a clue how to fix the issue.
