xj8 vdp 1999 cooling mysteries

I do not have heat in this car and mysteriously every now and then the radiator boils while the cars temp indicator is normal in the middle and the car pees out lots of coolant through the overflow tank.
what has been done so far:
replaced the old heater valve it was stuck closed. bench checked the 12 v pump works fine, flushed the in car heater core works fine.
Removed the thermostat works fine but replacing it anyway . Flushed motor back from the tstat hose and reverse through the exp tank water runs through.
any ideas?
